    9600 pro or 9800se?

Which one to go for? (both Sapphires.)

Looks like the 9600 pro beats it, but I was wondering if the softmod would make the 9800 any better.

    Cheers then,
    Kez.

I would go for the 9800SE. as
    a) you may be able to softmod it to r9800(pro?) (then overclock it same as that card.)
    b) if you cant softmod you can overclock it to r9600pro speeds easily.
    c) you have teh AIW facilities

    go for it

*If* it softmods then the 9800SE will go to a 9800 pro... I have an AIW SE that doesn't softmod without artifacts but it does go to 9800XT speeds. One thing that no one seems to mention much on the forums though is that the 9800 runs a lot hotter than the 9600 - probably worth trying one of those artic cooling things on one if you do get one. Why not just get a 9800 pro anyway?

    Edit: £140 for a 128MB 9800 Pro:

Edit 2: I'm assuming you *aren't* talking about an AIW card (sapphire do both an 9800SE AIW and a 9800SE which can still apparently be softmodded). If you want the AIW functions then go for it - they are bloody good IMO.

Yep... I'd be a bit worried that they don't have the 256 bit bus but apparently they do.

Well I'm still liking the look of the Sapphy 9600 as it's a bit cheaper and the mem on it is quite overclockable.

Let's face it, the 9800 isn't actually going to last any longer performance-wise.

True, it IS never ending. So I'd rather get a 9600 I think, because even if I get a 9800 I'll be changing it at the same point in the future due to technological changes.

AFAIK, Saphire does not make 9800SEs with 256-bit memory*. You can still try to unlock the 4 closed pipelines. But in the end, you'll end up with a very souped up 9500Pro with higher clocks for both GPU and memory.

IMHO, if a 9800SE does not at least have 256-bit memory, it's not worth getting. Even a failed soft-mod, this card would beat a 9600Pro even if you were to oc both cards to their max.

*Unless it's their AIW model, as all AIW 9800SEs come with 256-bit memory.

ive got a 9600pro and id say there isnt much point getting one now when 9800pro's are so cheap. the performance difference is noticable.

get the best you can afford i say...

Well in that case the AIW 9800SE is out - it can only do a single display (well apart from TV out)

if it modded , the 9800se would have greater resale value ?

if not, it still has the AIW features, and pretty much the same performance as a 9600
