New card to replace 8800GTS KO
Hi all,
I'm posting this on behalf of a friend who has a 2006 era Dell XPS 700.
6 months ago I sent him my old EVGA 8800GTS KO ACS3 640MB to replace the 7900GS SLI setup that his PC came with. Unfortunately, that card appears to have died - developing very bad graphics corruption (fuzzy screen, a big mess) a minute or so after boot. Wiping off drivers doesn't help, neither does booting in safe mode, so we've concluded the card is most likely defective. His old 7900s work fine, so it probably isn't the motherboard.
Basic system specs as follows:
E6700 (2.67GHz)
2GB OCZ RAM
Dell motherboard (OYF432) nforce 4 590 SLI chipset
He's looking for a new graphics card in the range of £100-140. What would you recommend? I appreciate that this forum is a goldmine for info on questions just like this one, my only worry and main reason for starting a new thread is compatibility with the generic dell motherboard, and bottle-necking with the CPU.
Would an ATI card work ok? He wouldn't be looking for crossfire, so might an ATI solution offer better value for money in this price range?
Thanks for any help!
Re: New card to replace 8800GTS KO
The best value for card would be an HD4890 1GB:

However like the 8800GTX 640MB this card requires a lot of power.
If you want a graphics card with decent performance, relatively low power consumption and has DX11 then an HD5770 1GB is worth looking at too:

Here is a review of the HD5770 1GB:

IMHO,with newer drivers performance should get better.
Re: New card to replace 8800GTS KO
wrt to the old 8800 640 does the splash screen look pixilated with recurring symbols, the drivers can be reinstalled and there are horizontal lines when windows boots on generic drivers?
If so bake it in the oven! 10 mins at 200C; there are loads of guides on the net!
Otherwise a 5770 or 4890; the GTX 260 may be another option. I think ATI are better value with the 5770 as newer drivers will increase performance and you get DX 11. I would get the 5770.
On a side not; how do you mange to get in so guickly Catty?

Would those cards run happily on his dell motherboard? Which of the three would be the preferred choice for warranty etc? Neither of us have any experience with ATI unfortunately.

That more or less fits his description yes, though he has a gradual buildup of corruption over time starting from when he reaches the desktop.

I may have trouble getting him to do that :P Though if the card really is dead, I guess there's nothing to lose!
How would the 5770 compare to the 4890? He runs XP 32 bit, so wouldn't be taking advantage of DX11. He said that having DX11 support wouldn't affect his choice of card.
Re: New card to replace 8800GTS KO
I don't think there have been been any advances in PCIe since 2006 so they should run fine. The 8800 640 should be PCIe 1.0 but even if your motherboard has PCIe 1.0 there should not be a problem. If you could get the part number for the motherboard from either the board or CPUID and post a new thread you're sure to get more answers.
I would go for the HIS only because of the cooler not being the reference ATI design which I am not a big fan of. I think the 5xxx series coolers may ok though. In terms of warranty you are going to have to check the listings and manufacturers websites for details; obviously the longer the better.
Go on convince him to put it in the oven; I'm dying to know if you can fix it.
Re: New card to replace 8800GTS KO
EVGA have a long warranty, RMA it, likely you'll get something updated, even an 8800GT is faster.

Am doing so :)
He says he wants to take some pics and post them up to see if anyone has any suggestions before he tries the oven method, though I can't see much he can do other than baking it if its not a software problem.
Re: New card to replace 8800GTS KO
The HD4890 will have the performance edge over the HD5770 but at the expensive of higher power consumption and more noise.
I would look at getting the His card TBH. The card does need one 6 pin PCI-E power connector and one 8 pin PCI-E power connector though. I think power adaptors do come with the card though.
Unlike other comparable ATI and Nvidia cards the HD5770 only needs one 6pin PCI-E power connector.
I would definitely check what PSU your friend has in their PC and what connectors it has first.
Also it maybe worth looking if EVGA will replace the card too. I would check the warranty as he could end up with a better card if they will replace it.
Re: New card to replace 8800GTS KO
Definately +1 on the EVGA warranty; they may send you a GTS250 or GTX260!

Looks like the 4890 then I think. His PSU has 2x6 pin connector, so we'd need to be sure that it comes with an adaptor before purchasing.
The card was bought in June 07, so is out of warranty (EVGA offer 2 year on their European sold cards). I've heard very good stories about EVGA warranties though - is there ANY chance they might budge on it?
Re: New card to replace 8800GTS KO
I would sent a sympathetic e-mail to EVGA and see if they may help out.
The HD4890 may work with a pair of 6 pin PCI-E power connectors although don't quote me on it.

I'll ask him to email EVGA, hopefully they will at least suggest something he can try, even if they won't budge on the warranty.
As for the 4890 power, we'll do a bit of research before making a decision on that.
Thanks!

if evga dont sort it out cook it :) told a lad on gameon to do it and his is sorted, he did have corruption all the time mind so might not help but hey what to lose?

Re: New card to replace 8800GTS KO
I'd stick a GTX260 in or the mentioned ATI 4890. Or if he intends to use Win7 and wants DX11 then the new GT 240 is nice depending on the resolution he uses.
