    Which Dell?

Having finally worked out that it was my monitor dying rather than my GFX card, I'm making that my next purchase. After some long hard thinking I've almost decided that I am going to get a Dell from PC Buy It because of their 3 Year On-Site, Next Working Day, Zero Dead Pixel Warranty.

But should I get the Dell Ultrasharp 2209WA with its E-IPS Panel or go for greater real estate on the Dell G2410 (which looks to be nicer than the Dell ST2410)?

The other monitors I looked at were the Samsung 2443NW because of its 1900x1200 resolution and the HP LP2475w. In the end I decided I couldn't justify spending £400 on the latter, and the PC Buy It Warranty won the day for Dell.

Now my main uses will be web surfing, games and DVD movies (not Blue Ray yet, but it's probably not too far off). My card is a 4870 OC. Given that the 24" are both 1900x1080 I'm edging towards the 2209WA. I don't need the viewing angles, but then as the monitor is only 2½' away from me I probably don't need 24" either.

Anyone have any of the mentioned monitors?

The LP2475W can be had for under £370. OTH, I would prefer the 2209WA to the other cheaper monitors since I do some image editing as it will be a better monitor for such things. The advantage of having a lower resolution monitor is that your graphics card should be able to run games at the native resolution of the monitor longer.

The 2209WA is cheaper at Ebuyer than Scan though:

My brother has the HP monitor. While he loves it for document editing when pivoted in portrait mode (where viewing angles are especially important), and it does a good job for photo editing, it hasn't completely blown him away for watching DVDs. But then again, he hardly ever has time to watch any DVDs on it, so that's no big deal for him. It does a great job of what he needs it for.

Here are a few more thoughts to help you with your choice:

If you are into first person shooters or other games where reaction times are critical, then the average 33ms lag of the HP might be just a little too much. Even the 20ms of the 2209WA may be pushing it, but many less hard core FPS gamers seem very happy with this trade-off for a lovely E-IPS display.

If you often compare two documents/web pages side by side then the extra pixel with will be very useful, but for normal web-pages you are unlikely to notice much difference between 1920 and 1650 pixel width.

As the physical dimensions of a monitor increase you need better viewing angles simply to match the increased angles you end up viewing the edge of the screen at when sitting the same distance from your monitor.

Hope some of this helps you with your decision.

    Re: Which Dell?

There is a very good thread at anandtech listing lots of top monitors including useful details such as the inputs lags I previously posted. As I'm not yet allowed to post links here, you will have to find it yourself. It is called The LCD Thread, it is sticky and is found in Forums > Hardware and Technology > Video Cards and Graphics.

I hope you like your new monitor - whichever one you chose

Too old for FPS. RPG or Strategy for me. From the thread you referenced the 2209WA looks a good choice. Thanks.

Oh and Cat^5, as mentioned in my message I won't be buying from either EBuyer or Scan, because I want PC Buy It's Zero Dead Pixel Warranty.

Just a quick heads up, response times below 25ms is for all intents and purposes unnoticeable so don't get bogged down with response times. 16ms and below is most certainly unnoticeable. Hope you enjoy your monitor

    Re: Which Dell?

I have never had dead pixels with any desktop LCD monitor I ever had and the same goes with countless monitors friends have bought and the ones at work too. Some of these monitors range from Apple Studio displays to cheap GNR LCD monitors. Unless you are perhaps buying some ultra cheap monitor it is a problem which has been blown out of proportion and in real life is exceeding rare. I have had one slightly off pixel on one notebook I have owned and this developed after a few years too. The other notebooks I have had or used have never had an issue.

    Re: Which Dell?

The monitor to my mum's pc has a pixel that is always green. that's the only instance of dead pixel i've ever seen out of me and all my friends and I have to say it's not annoying at all. 99% I don't notice it. In fact I go months forgetting that it's even there and one day I notice it again. Makes for a nice surprise once in a while.

    Re: Which Dell?

I suppose as the price for the silver 2209WA seems quite competitive at PCbuyit(although the black version is quite expensive) it is worth getting it from them if you want some additional piece of mind.

Damn. The price was very good, but they sold out. Perhaps they don't want people to pre-order.

And I have had a monitor with a bright green pixel. I noticed it quite a lot despite being towards the edge of the screen.

The silver is still in stock and it's 20% cheaper:

Do you really want a black border that much?

I would be careful about buying dell products. I've been recently looking into buying a new laptop and was going to choose Dell (since they have a 3 Year On-Site, Next Working Day warranty package), only to find out lots of forums about users complaining about Dell's tricky warranty system and how they seem to be playing vicious circles with Dell's CS representatives. Maybe it only applies with their laptops? I'm not sure, all I'm saying is be careful!

Dell has for years been known for having faulty products.... Dell always had great replacement procedures, but you don't want to have a product to be continuously malfunctioning on you. Just be careful, that's all I'm saying.

Don't get me wrong, I love Dell monitors as well! I'm not trying to make a bad name for their company, I'm just saying be careful, that's all lol... please don't misunderstand. This is not a hate message to Dell hahah.
