    Question 5770 or GTS 250?

Ok so my PC is getting pretty old and i want to upgrade the graphics.
    I have a Packard Bell iXtreme X2711:
    Q6600 @ 2.4GHz
    4GB 800Mhz RAM (Upgraded from 2GB)
8500GT 256Mb (You can see why im upgrading)

I have a budget of about £200. I know that for both of these cards i will have to upgrade my PSU because my current one (as far as i know) doesn't have the power connectors or enough power to accomodate either of these cards. I am considering this
PSU:OCZ StealthXStream 600w Silent SLI Ready ATX2 Power Supply

    And one of these GPU's:

    Nvidia:Novatech GeForce GTS 250 SLI 1024MB GDDR3 TV-Out/VGA DVI PCI-Express - Retail with PhysX, CUDA & 3D Stereo

    ATI:HIS ATI Radeon 5770 1024MB GDDR5 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI PCI-Express Graphics Card

    All from the Novatech website.
Which card do you guys suggest?

Also i have heard that Packard Bell PSU's are a bit dodgy with their size (not sure if it's true) if anyone can help me find out if that PSU will fit my case it would be appreciated.

    Thanks a lot,
    Steve

P.S. I will find out the make and model of my PSU as soon as i can, not at home right now.

I'd personally go for the 5770 as it is several years newer and has Dx11 capability.

I can't even believe you asking this The 5770 is the obvious choice my friend
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Aye, 4870 performance for little more than you pay for a 1GB 4870 and lower power requirements to boot, and DX11 of course.

Lol, unfortunately it was a real question but my bigger problem is the PSU as i dont think the PB standard and every other standard is the same.

Here is a review of the HD5770 which compares it to the HD4870 1GB:

The HD5770 is cheaper from Scan and Ebuyer though.

Wow so for most of the tests the HD4870 was slightly better than the HD5770, i didnt expect that, but i think i'll stick to the 5570

However in real world situations the difference isn't going to be that noticeable and it wouldn't surprise me that with newer drivers the performance of the HD5770 should improve slightly too.

I can't tell from his post if he's talking about one GTS250 or two- if it's two, there would be no question in my mind which I'd rather have. The GTS250s would p3wn a 5770 in gaming.

I don't know how things are priced over there, but around here you can HD4890s, and Superclocked GTX260C216s for around the same price as 5770s- and both offer many advantages over the hamstrung 5770.

    Re: 5770 or GTS 250?

Except this supposed hamstringing doesn't seem to prevent it from obtaining really good results, especially compared to the last generation of mid range cards from both ATI and nVidia, not to mention dx11 capability.

    Re: 5770 or GTS 250?

In fact, the HD5770 is faster than the HD4870 at a much smaller thermal budget, and the price will come down a fair chunk once the new model reference cards filter out and supply/demand stabilises.

    The problems are:
    1. Last gen cards that cost about the same, sometimes less, perform MUCH better.
    2. Lack of DX11 content makes "I'll buy this much slower card at every game but 2 in hopes they will come out with some more games that I can play in DX11!" a questionable choice. The performance of the card is so poor compared to ATi's own 4890 that even the boost of DX11 can't help it overcome it's narrow memory bus:

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/vid..._12.html#sect1

Note the 4890 beating the 5770, even though the latter is in DX11, and the abysmally low minimum fps of all the DX11 cards.

The similarly priced GTX260 offers similar, often better, performance while giving the buyer CUDA, PhysX, 3D Vision, and AA in games like BatmanAA.

Althrough I agree that buying a card solely for the purpose of future proving is a foolish, I do not agree that the GTX260 is better than the 5770. Primary because I don't rate technologies like PhyX, CUDA and 3D Vision due to their closed nature.

Comparing Apples with Oranges, I'd likely just get which one is cheaper. They seem to perform equally. Sometimes the GTX 260 kicks arse, particulay in PhysX games, sometimes the 5770 will kick arse.

Personally, I would wait until nVidia finally comes out with the GTX 300 series and forces AMD to provide more competiative pricing. But if you can't wait, I would actually get a AMD 4890.
