    Cool FX5200 for £60?

Just saw this in Maplins today - it was a new store opening so I was (stupidly) optimistic that we'd have a good competitor to PCW and maybe somewhere I could grab the odd component on the highstreet... needless to say, I was wrong.

Admittedly the card was PCI which makes it a bit "unusual", but I got one of those in my Dell desktop about 7 years ago... surely even integrated graphics is roughly of that calibre these days!

Not only that, it was labelled as a "bargain"

I've seen "dodgy deals" on the high street before, but I was fairly shocked by this one.

    Re: FX5200 for £60?

If anyone thinks that's a good deal I've got an FX5200 here they can have for the *bargain* price of £40...

Maplin's component prices have *always* been utterly ridiculous. I only go near the place if it's an absolute emergency...

Well the number is higher than a 4890 so it must be faster.

I was genuinely disappointed... I've been so fed up of PCWorld being useless for absolutely everything - I'd love to be able to have a look at cases in the flesh, and wouldn't mind being able to pick up components from a shop round the corner, so when I noticed the new Maplin in town and a component section, I was fairly excited.

But yeah, everything was a total rip-off, and the cases were vile... you know the bluster types, with lots of unnecessary silver plastic everywhere, and a gigantic fan on the front, which suck in virtually every category. Then, just to top it off, I asked if they had any cable ties, and got led the entire way round the shop by this confused bloke, who then asked three colleagues who concluded that they were in the stockroom, and I could have some if I knew what I wanted. And then they didn't have what I wanted anyway.

    Re: FX5200 for £60?

Yeah Maplins is ridiculous. Most of their stuff is overpriced and half the staff can't help.

Well what I said applies to the 2 Maplins I visited, dunno about them all.

    Re: FX5200 for £60?

Maplins recently did have the HD4850 1GB for around £80 and it was the version with the copper PCS cooler. Sometimes they do have decent deals going on.

    I think they still do online B-Grade @ £69.99
    9800GT B-Grade same price.

I am still undecided what to get....might wait till new year and hope to see the price of gtx260 go sub-£100

    Re: FX5200 for £60?

I think this is a problem everywhere, a retail wide problem where things just get forgotten about. It may be down to the price when brought bulk and not wanting to loose too much?

    Check Scans backlog i.e. a 2900; a real bargain!

Thing is though, how old must the card be? And it was out on display, all lit up in a cabinet. The shop's only been there a matter of weeks, so it must've been shipped in... not sure it's just old stock lying around tbh.

The scan stuff always makes me laugh though, was looking for some cheap Conroe chips on Scan a while back, and was offered this mighty Extreme Edition processor.

Must have been overstock; very cheeky to use it in a main POS though.

Nice CPU; unfortunately the price Sign of the times thinking about what you could get now for that!
