    Who will buy Nvidia's 6800?

So, the benchies are starting to trickle out and the overall conclusion is that it's very impressive. No doubt it'll be expensive, and most disturbingly the fact you need a minimum of a 480w PSU to run it. So, who will be getting one?

maybe if its in the £100ish price range i'll consider getting one... is that official it needs a 480w psu.. i thought it just needed a decent one (ie decent brand 350w vs q-tec 550w the decent brand one would be better..) ?

anyhow i'm gonna wait for some nice reviews aswell, and see what some more refined drivers do - oh and how overclockable it is - esp with such a low core clock speed..

It is tempting, but i think i will wait for the price to drop and see what else competes with it, in a bang for buck kinda way.

Not too keen on spending more than £150 really...but we will see

Hopefully i get some sort of new graphics for HL2/Doom3 as my ti4200 is starting to show its age.

    Will

ill wait for the r423 i think...
Nvidias 6800 doesnt loook like anything mroe than a speedbump with enhanced drivers (to take advantage of idle shaders). The driver improvements could be done on other dx9 cards but i doubt nvidia will atleast for a while. we will have to wait to see if ati will. Im hoping they wont however as it decreases image quality slightly.

Update April 9, 2004: We just received confirmation that X800 Pro will run on 12 pipelines, Radeon X800 XT will run on 16 pipelines and Radeon X800 SE will run on 8. It is important to note that all three of these chips are based on the same R420/R423 core. ATI could have an overclocker'ss/softmodder s dream with the X800 Pro and SE derivaties! This also comes as somewhat of a surprise since original leaked ATI documents claimed R420 would utilize 8 "Extreme" pipelines.
And nvidia still are yet to produce an uber softmodable/overclockable card...

Notice how they missed off the 8x AA mode on the reg's "review" to show the nVidia card in a more favourable light?

That's why I prefer hexus reviews, you get the full picture

after reading reveiws/previews it seems clear to me that this card is not good enough at high res esp. with AA. Ok so it blitzes the 9800xt at 1024 with 4xAA or less, but the XT can still keep up/beat at 1024/1280 with 4xAA or more. Im a little disappointed and in all honesty expected better.

As i play all my games in 1280 theres really no point in me spending so much when i could get a 9800pro and OC and get similer real world performance.

Maybe later driver revisions will sort things out. We shall see...
