Morning chaps:)
If I had a GPU that had 2 x HDMI + 1 x Displayport (which I beleive is the standard on the 5970) and I had a monitor that had 2 x DVI-D and 2 x DVI-I and a second monitor that had VGA/DVI how would I best connect for dual screen function (bearing in mind I think the 1st screen mentioned - a 30" NEC, needs to be connected to 2 DVI-D sockets):O_o1:
Usually 30" monitors need a DVI-D DualLink cable (see here for all the various DVI permutations: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface) as opposed to two physical connections. See the fourth connector down in the list.
you'll need to find out for sure either way. You'll also need to know if the HDMI outputs can provide DualLink or not. if they can, can you drive a DualLink monitor as well as a single on the other connector.
If you can, that's how I would drive them, both from the HDMI outputs adapter to DVI.
Displayport adapters are still pretty expensive, i woudl avoid them if you can. I woudl have thought they would enable either both HDMI or one HDMI plus the DisplayPort, that makes most sense.
For some reason I thought your GPU was acquiring Borg-like characteristics!! :O_o1:
Oh and actual model number would help anyone confirm all this :)
I thought the 5970 had basically the same display outputs as the 5870 / 5850, which is usually 2 DVI-I + HDMI + DP, isn't it? :O_o1:
DVI on both monitors IMO.
Dual link cables all the way to be on the safe side (the 30" will max out at around 1280x768 otherwise).....not sure why the NEC 30" would need 2 cables though.

I was unsure how Dual Link worked - in the meantime I will be using My 285GTX - does the dual link cable only attach to one output on the GPU and one input on the monitor then ?Quote:

Yeah, Dual Link DVI is just a few extra pins connected in the DVI cable. 1 cable that can carry double the bandwidth.
You also need to make sure its DVI-D, I am not sure if it's misused terminology or not but a lot of places call DVI-I cables duallink because they carry both DVI-D and DVI-A.....these are not what you want.
