    ATI HD5670 first full review!

Looks to have performance half way between a 9600GT and a 9800GT:

    http://www.hardwarezone.com/articles...109&cid=3&pg=1

The performance increase over the HD4670 is huge and this is with initial launch drivers. Power consumption is slightly less at idle and slightly more at load.

The 4670 was extremely successful when it came out so no surprises AMD has done it again with the 5670.

Looks like a nice little card. could be a good upgrade over my aging ati 3850 hopefully the price will drop nicely in a few months!

Re: ATI HD5670 first full review!

My takings from the Hexus review is that its more of a mixed bag than out-right win, pricing is a bit Q.Q as well.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Hexus have not done a very useful review TBH! Very few people will buy the 1GB version of the HD5670 when the 512MB version is so much cheaper and also when the HD5750 512MB is in a similar price range too. Of course the HD5750 512MB was not even mentioned let alone part of the review!

They should have reviewed the 512MB version of the HD5670 which is between £70 to £80 and compared this to the 9800GT Green Edition 512MB as this the version of the 9800GT which is most commonly available and in a similar price range. The 9800GT Green Edition has lower clocks than a standard 9800GT as it is bus powered and is probably the most powerful Nvidia card currently available for between £70 to £80 unless you can find a GTS250 for around the same price.

So is this the fastest single slot card now?

Sadly it doesn't look convincing enough an upgrade for the 4670 in the wife's Shuttle

Are you serious??!! The HD5670 is something like 25% to 50% faster than a HD4670 if you check the review in the first post which is now back up.

The other card to consider is the bus powered 9800GT Green Edition which many reviews are ignoring although I suspect that the HD5670 would be have lower idle power consumption.

Quite serious. I don't upgrade components for just a 50% performance increase.

My normal metric for CPU buying for example is a doubling of performance for around 100 quid. My last update there was from an X2-5600 to Phenom-II 955BE, now that is a difference I can feel

    My GPU updates have been similar, 6600GT -> 7900GT -> 8800GT.

You can probably guess from that, that I am starting to look around for a new card for my PC (dual slot cooler, Linux friendly, at least double 8800GT performance) but at the back of my mind I think I need an upgrade path for the wife's Shuttle for when she notices my machine is, given the bit of a gap already between 4670 and 8800, at least 3 times faster than hers.

Every time I see an advert showing a single slot card, the text seems to say that the image is not necessarily the card you will get!

I also look for at least a 100% performance increase when upgrading. However a 25% to 50% increase in performance is still quite a bit TBH especially for a low power consumption single slot card. Hence I expect lower performance increases with such cards since they have to be kibbled to fit in a specific power envelope and price range.

The increase in performance in a game like Crysis is massive!

The game is basically playable on a standard 1680X1050 monitor with AA enabled.

With no AA it is only a few frames behind a 8800GT.

The review uses a standard 8800GT. The 9800GT Green Edition which is bus power sports lower clocks than a normal 8800GT or 9800GT.

Actually those high-res results might be interesting. I think her next upgrade will be her monitor, and her 4670 may object to more pixels.

Still, interesting to see Anandtech saying that the 4850 is the card to go for vs 5760 whilst they are still making them.

    couple of problems there:
    - The 4850's are very thin on the ground, esp cards with the original stock cooler.
    - The original 4850 single slot stock cooler really couldn't cope, making it hot and noisy
    - Power issues, the power demand of a 4850 is a good chunk higher than the 4670 or 5670, it's still quiet low as demands power demands go, but an htpc psu might not be able to cope with the extra load of a 4850, depending on psu of course.

PS the fastest single slot card I know of is still the Galaxy GTX260+ Razor however I cannot find it for sale any ware in the uk.
    http://vr-zone.com/articles/galaxy-g...260-/7770.html

£150 off a HK ebay seller is all I can find http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-Galaxy-GeF...item19b8ff6958

and of course all the possible issues with a 4850 single slot will be just if not more true with a single slot gtx260

Re: ATI HD5670 first full review!

Hot and noisy doesn't sound too bad, the 4670 with standard single slot cooler is pretty noisy (under load) as they made the fan so small and buzzy As long as the Shuttle case can draw the air out the back.

I think the Shuttle is a 350W psu, it is certainly one of the higher rated ones. The CPU is only 95W TDP, and being a Shuttle there isn't exactly a lot else plugged in to pull power.

Which brings it down to availability. I had a look on ebay for single slot 4850 cards, and they do seem to be on there. Perhaps that is the only way forward, an old second hand card

Re: ATI HD5670 first full review!

Wonder if we'll ever get a single slot 5750 - I reckon it should be possible, and that'd be the obvious next upgrade. Might have to wait a bit for that though Alternatively you could wait and see what the 6 series brings in a year or so

As to moving up a res-step or two, I think the 4670 probably hits its ceiling at 1680 x 1050. Anything beyond that and I suspect it might throw a bit of a fit

I would probably get a single slot HD4830 or 9800GT TBH as they both have lower peak power consumption when compared to an HD4850. Many HD4850 cards have broken PowerPlay meaning that idle power consumption is very high!!

TBH,I would go for a bus power 9800GT Green Edition:

Here is a review of the card:
