I thought I would do a quick poll to see how much Hexus members usually spend on their graphics cards. It would be useful to see what price bracket is important for most Hexus members.

"If it ain't on my motherboard it isn't worth considering!!"
But I don't game, so I probably shouldn't have taken part in this poll :D
Although as a general graphics card, I really can't see me ever spending more than £150.
£100-£150. Wouldn't spend anything over that for a graphics card unless it was something special.
My 8800GT was about £110 when I first bought it and that's around the figure I'll spend on its successor. £150 would be the absolute max and it'd take a lot of convincing to go that far. £100 to £120 is the sweet spot.
I wouldn't want to spend over £100 but I might be tempted to one day. For now I voted £50-£100.
Previously owned: 8600GT ~£45
Now owning: HD4770 ~£55
Tempted for another HD4770 or a 5770 though.
7800 GS was £200
8800 GTS was £200
Pair of 4870s was £150
I'd say £200.
300+
1'st post, Hi everyone :D
Usually about £150-200, but I'd be willing to go over £200 if it's something special.
£120ish is the limit for me, especially since tech gets so old so quickly :( I remember paying around £100 for my 3850, dont even want to think about it now!
How much you spend on a card when you upgrade. Basically it would be useful to see what price brackets people tend to keep to when buying a graphics card.
It could be that you buy a £300 card and won't upgrade for three years or you buy a £150 card and upgrade after two years.
and spending £170 every 7 years is even better value for money :P
although i do tend to use it untill it breaks, also to try and run things that it wasnt suposed to run let alone heard of, and run things that bring computers to thier knees even now.
how else would i have found out that crysis runs at 15 fps, in low details, on an ATI Radeon 9600 from 2003 :D thats what killed/melted my previous computer by the way. So there are a few drawbacks to running very old computers on modern games.
my last card was a BFG water cooled GTX280, so just under £500
Think my last was about 120 quid .. although I'll probably use onboard graphics on my next system, as it's ample for my needs.
I've never bought an absolute top of the range card, I always buy a card about 75% up the performance ladder for gaming and I find that can usually deal with all latest games.
Usually change graphics card around every 18 months.
The most highly specced card I ever bought was an Nvidia 8800GTS 640Mb in November 2006. That's still going strong in my number two machine, plays CoD6 MW2 quite fine though not at full res.
Another reason for not buying top of the range is the frustration in seeing the self same card around half the price you paid for it six months afterwards :D
I ticked '£150 - £200'
Doh I just voted for £100-150, should of been £50-£150
Mainly because I look for around the £80-£120 range, I did used to look around the £50
I also keep an eye on releases so that I can pick up a card that was £200 on release when they are being sold off cheap due to a new card coming out, so now the price is in my range.
Just looking back at this poll right now, I didn't see £50-£150 last time, guess I was in a rush :P Too bad I can't take back my vote and vote for £50-£150.
£300+
its gonna be £50-£150 for me. As long as the graphics card outperforms my ps3 then it will do for me i suppose.
£150 - £200, but I did recently purchase a 5870 regardless of the price as I wanted to get my new rig up & running for Mass Effect 2 & Alien vs Predator, couldn't be bothered to wait for nvidia's new graphics card either.
for me im happy to spend 150 - 200, plus the sale of my own gpu....
£150 - £200, although I've had a few over £200, £150-£200 seems most popular.
I've spent roughly £130 on a 6600GT, and about £135 for a 7900GS, had to replace the 6600GT after it died (was in my dads PC) with a cheapo £40 card, so my average is around just over £100. I'll be getting a much more powerful card for my next full build though, looking at the £150 - £200 range for that, although if needed I'd consider spending up to £220. If I can get a 5850 under £200 later in the year I'll probably get that, unless by some miracle the 5870 is that cheap, then I'd get that.
I spent ~£300 on my X800XT then moved to 7900GTX (forgotten how much now); stopped playing games, but currently undecided between the 5850 or 5870.
Last card was a 4890 for approx £150 new but looking for a 5890 now but not at the prices theya re now. maybe when they drop under £200 I will splash out and get a new psu at the same time.
I use mine till it really needs upgrading or i have surplus cash :D.
I had the following:
AMD 3000+ Barton
1.5gb Ram DDR3200 (random sticks!)
Radeon 9600XT
Now this was probably bought in like 2004 from my dads friend (he had a huge insurance claim and got all new pc's etc :L) And did a whole overhal just after crysis came out and spent £180 on an 8800GTS g92 (wishes he didnt but still). Previous system had an AMD 2400 and a radeon 9500 (was given to friend after) but the upgrade was really cheap so yeh it lasted me ages!.
Now im planning to upgrade just for aliens vs predator, sad but i want DX11 :D.
How much? More than I should but less than I'd like ;)
Voted £200-£300 though in reality i probably wouldn't go above £250 unless that extra £50 got me a big increase in performance.
cant remember what i voted for but my history was
9800pro
9800pro (first one was dodgy)
8600gt 512mb
HD4870 512mb
so £20,free,70,200
i think if i was going to get something new right now i be about £100ish possibly, £150ish if its worth it
but whats better in performace per £1 than a HD4870 right now? its like £60 and meets if not exeeds all gaming needs for today
Well, it used to be around the £200 mark, but what with having a console now, and with the fact that the outgoing generation of GPU are getting less and less obsolete each cycle, I wouldnt want to spend more than £150.
Mind you, this would be less is I didnt have a 24" monitor, as I only really like to run it at native. If I had a 22" then the £100 would prob be fine to find something nowadays.
Thinking back my last few graphics cards have gone something like this:
9500Pro £140
6600GT £120
6800GT £100
X1800XT £170
8800GT £170
HD4850 £130
I'm starting to think a beter option might be waiting a few months longer and stick to a £100 limit.
Cant vote there but I used to spend 200-300 on a card. Now I have to stick with around 100-150 mark due to money flow.
Sice the only GPU that I have personally bought is a HD4850, at launch, it was 100/150 for me. I dont think that I will upgrade again untill the HD6--- series, or GT4-- series come out though, as student monies will not be great - (uni next year)
Most I ever spent was £200, that was on a 3DFx VooDoo-2 but in my defense it came bundled with 3 games I really wanted and were all 20 to 30 quid street price at the time. Most games bundles since have sat un-opened.
Still, I answered 100 to 150 as that is what I will spend now on my or my wife's PC. If it is someone else's PC then they often get something much lower end if not onboard graphics.
I have spent 200+ on graphics cards on several occasions, and have always kicked myself 3 months later. The last few revisions though, I've tried to keep around the ton mark, which usually means upgrading 6 months behind a release.
Max £200. Unless the card was something amazingly special. Not sure how much I spent on my currect GFX card (see sig). I'll check the invoice when I get home.
£340 is the most i've spent.
£300 is usually my limit, but i do tend to be top end single GPU cards that last me a while - on top of that i have to figure in the cost of a copper waterblock too.
Daft, I know.
around the 200 mark.
I have learnt my lesson, after my first real GPU purchase set me back £252.
Was more than I wanted, but got carried away. An X1800XT. Lasted well for my usage, but of course dropped in price significantly over the next 6 months..
Got a bit of a shouting at for that.:embarrassed:
Last one was £122 on a XFX 4890.
I spent close to £400 on my current 8800GTX, but it has lasted me the best part of 3 years without struggling too much. For me, it's unfortunately the price of gaming at 1920x1200 on a 24" monitor. At the moment I'm looking at upgrading to a 5870 as the 8800GTX is struggling a bit with GTA IV, but I don't want to pay much more than £300. Fortunately it seems the prices are beginning to come down as the stock's becoming available again.
Got this mailer from OCUK this morning:
5870
I know it's OCUK and they're not favoured around these parts but it does show you can get a 5870 for 300 quid now.
Last few purchases were:
- £265-280 odd for 8800GTX on release week.
- £200 for a 4870 (512Meg) on release week.
- £365-380 for a 4870x2 a few months later.
- £560 for the 5970 recently.
Gone for £300+ since that's what I'd be willing to spend on the latest graphics card that suits my needs. I usually look for a new card every 12-18 months.
£150-200 range until recently. Now I try to keep to £100-150 even if I have to go second hand. Exception if a £150 card provides excellent bang for buck, as I would still need to add another £20 for a 3rd party cooler (gaming cards are just so noisy compared to the rest of the system).
The most i've ever spend on a graphics card is £50 and that was a 4850 off of here :) Lovely Hexus
It would be nice to get at least a 100 votes in this poll!!
Why Cat, that really is a beautiful bell curve.
usually spend about £150 on a card but scan had £25 off the xfx XXX 5850 so i accidentally spent £230 yesterday am hoping it lasts me a few years
Well the only card that I have actually brought is a XFX XXX 7600GT for around £130 3 1/2 years ago I've gone for the £100-£150 as that's also the price I'd be looking at if I were to upgrade it now.
Not being a massive gamer and only having a 1280x1024 display I've never needed anything more, although I do have a X1950XT (nice little hand-me-down) sat on the desk that I haven't got around to fitting yet.
I'm trying to remember how much my GeForece 256 cost me all those years ago.
I would have said £200 - £300 before I had a mortgage, now it would have to be £150 - £250 :)
My 4850 vapor-x is ample for this 22" monitor - I havent got any games that are advanced enough to make it sweat. It was about £110 when reasonably new. There is also an Athlon XP2400 with a 7600GS (AGP!) which is still going strong - I think that was about £65. My work machine has the 785G chipset and makes do nicely with the HD4200 onboard.
Would probably go to £150 if I was going to get more than 2 years out of it but would sooner spend the ££s on SSD atm.
Voted £50 - £150 (is this supposed to overlap with the next band?)
I should've looked before I voted, I think I spoilt the bell curve slightly ;)
This is a tricky one for me, because I've tended to buy either at the very low end or very high end, and I also tend to get a lot of kit second hand. So I've bought a GeForce 4MX, a Radeon 7000, and an FX5500 all to upgrade IGPs for casual gaming, but I don't think I'd describe any of those as "gaming graphics cards", even though my main reason to buy them was as gaming upgrades. They were all - well, less than £30, probably.
I recently bought a 7900GTO second hand to stick in a second hand spare gaming build - that was well under £50. I bought a 9800Pro to upgrade from an FX5200 - I got that when they dipped under £100 - and I've also bought an 8800GTX for - well, some silly amount. So it's hard to say what I "usually" spend on gaming graphics, as I don't buy gaming graphics cards that often - I've bought three, all in different price bands.
On the other hand, if I was considering a new graphics card now I'd be looking at a HD4670 as a minimum and a HD5750 512MB as a maximum - so £50 - £85ish, which is where I stuck my vote :D
I usually spend around the £150-£200 mark. Then try and make them last me 2 to 3 years. seems to work well :)
6 more votes need to get to 100!! :)
I'm really tempted by the 5870 Vapor-X that's appeared in stock at Scan. My hand is reaching for the credit card...
Just one more to go!!!! Still keeping the curve though.
The most I've spent on a graphics card was £316.07 for a geforce 6800GT when they first came out and I bite the bullet and spent quite a bit on a 939 rig with a 3500+
Generally it depends on what my needs are at that time. As such It can be anything from £120 to £400 depending on my requirements and other factors.
The most I've ever spent was 400 quid on a S3 Vision 968 - and it didn't even have any 3D acceleration (it was a professional card with certified drivers and the best option for multi platform use at that point - it even supported multimonitor if you had two of the cards! A month later the Matrox Millenium came out and did more for half the price..)
Next was probably a Voodoo2 almost on launch day and then two fanless Fatal1ty 7600GTs for silent multi monitor at 100 quid each. My refurb 8800GTX was only 50 quid off ebay.
When I upgrade I expect to pay in the region of 150 to 200 quid, so I can run recent games at top resolution. Currently have too many games to play through. Fallout 3 and Gothic 3 are probably the most graphically intensive games I have, and I've not even taken them out of shrinkwrap.
PK
It seems that around 80% of people polled would not spend more than £200 on a graphics card and that over half would only spend a maximum of £150.
This means that cards like the HD5850 and above will not be considered by most users and the same goes with Nvidia Fermi unless there are cards under £200.
I've went through phases. First proper gaming PC that I built, bought an 8800gt for £110. Then next PC I bought a 4850 for £125. After that I went a bit mad, i7 PC and SSD etc spent £250 on a GTX280, which at the time was a bargain. I'm now back to using a 4850 and will upgrade later in the year. But I'm quite happy spending between £200-£300. Though I wouldn't really go over that, it then becomes a bit too much for one component.
I've bought about 3 cards in 10 years. All between £50-100.
I need a passively cooled one.
I bought that HD 5870 Vapor-X. £350 of graphic goodness. :O_o1:
Less than an hour later it was out of stock again!
Lets see if we can get upto 150 votes! :)
The last one I bought was an AGP XFX 6800 Ultra just as they came out at about £385.
well i had to do an emergency upgrade(ish) as my 8800gts started to fail last week. managed to get a good deal on a brand spanking new xfx 4870 1gb rev.2 (egg) for just £80+vat.
thought it was a bit of a bargin, well compared to my gts which was nigh on £200 when i bought it. my max is usually £200 and look at whats available with features i want - don't matter n/v or ati. but as i'm gonna do a major upgrade towards end of year early next so didn't see the point of going overboard at this point in time.
£100 to £150 for me. My GTX 260 should last at least another two years easy enough for me.
Before I bought my new system I was always around the under £100 mark. However with the new system I got it with a GTX 480, a significant bump from my last ATI HD 4670, lol. A bit much for my needs maybe, but it all worked out to be at my budget. So I thought, what the hell.
the most i've spent is £200. but i don't think i'll spend that much again.
Max I spent was ~£380 back in 2007 for a EVGA 8800GTX - although it lasted me 18 months ( and could have lasted me longer in all honestly) I remember feeling sick as I pressed the buy button.
Normally aim at keeping it below £300 unless there's a mega deal on offer. Last few purchases, from memory:
6800 GT £280 '04
1900 XTX £265 '06
8800 GTX £379 '07
GTX 280 £229 '09
Jeez, could have paid off my mortgage if it wasn't for computer hardware!
Because i rarely upgrade, i tend to buy cards which are £200 or a bit over as i expect to use it for 2-3 years maybe even longer if i can get good enough configs so the games i want to play can run on it :).
Usually I spend <£150, but this time I made an exception for the GTX 460s, because they really seemed worth the extra cost to me.
The 5770 for between £100 - £150 is a good price bracket for my budget, and it will have all the performance I'll need for the less-demanding but modern games that I play.
These are from my memory (the order can be wrong):
Trindent - no idea
S3 trio 4mb - no idea
Savage 4 - it was so bad I've tried to erase all the memories of it, especially the price...
Ati rage 128 8MB - ~70
TNT 2 Ultra - ~120
Geforce 256 ~ 180
GEforce 2MX 32MB ~ 60
Geforce 4Ti 4200 128Mb ~ 120
Radeon 8500 ~ 100
Radeon X800GTO 256 ~100
Radeon 4850 1GB ~70
and now I have a temp card, 9800GTX (delivery pending) ~ 47
the next one will be a 5850 or equal when it'll worth to buy it
The 4 cards I really loved are the rage 128, x800GTO, 4850 and the Geforce4 Ti4200
If i have the money and enough psu to use it i would consider spending more than 150 on a GPU but right now i have only spent about £100.
