AFAIK nvidia has fixed it's yield problems.
The bad yields were the reason it was delayed until after xmass in the first place becasue of the yield issues and to give them the time to fix it.

    An old article, but interesting:

Well if it's a X2 jump over my current card i'd buy it because there's ALWAYS something better round the corner regardless. The latter part is usually only incrementally faster and heat isn't an issue for me on water. I think i got the first 8800 card and the first 280 card - both of which got refreshed.

Re: Second generation Fermi to be launched at the end of the year

What a difference 18 months makes in the PC market. 18 months ago Nvidia was riding high with the GTX280 vs the just released 4870. A real turn of fortune for ATI at that point, now ATI is the value king AND the single chip performance king, with excellent power draw at idle, and the only company with DX11 products through the entire line up.

What has Nvidia given us in 18 months? The GTX295, two 260/280 cores on a single PCB. Power hungry, not very elegant, no DX11, offensively expensive. They've had 18 months or more to get something to market to better GTX280 architecture, they have failed big time.

They also gave us the new drivers which disables Physx (from nVidia GPUs and the Aegia PPU) when a non-nVidia card is the primary!

Come on Shaithis. You can't blame that on nVidia. Rollo did that all to himself

I'm sure that nVidia will bounce back though. It's not as if we've not seen this kind of behaviour before with ATi and nVidia taking control for a generation or two.

I've not been keeping up that closely (largely because I am not in the market for a new card), but has the 5xxxseries significantly improved on idle power consumption over the 4xxx series? That's one thing nVidia definitely had over AMD with the GT2xx cards.
