Re: BenQ FP241W equivalent?
The LP2475W was meant to be quite a decent display and its successor the ZR24w should be better hopefully. They both use IPS panels.
Have you considered getting three 23" displays??
The NEC EA231WMi is an IPS monitor and is under £300 brand new:

Re: BenQ FP241W equivalent?
If he's using the monitor for photo editing, then the 16:9 ratio above is far from ideal.
The best consumer monitor around at the moment is probably the HP LP2475W, but 3 of them don't come cheap, not compared to the £250 per monitor you were looking at.
Re: BenQ FP241W equivalent?
I never thought about it before but the more screens you have in a multi-display setup the more chance there is of one developing a fault. It would be nice to think an identical replacement could be found if one developed a fault but it's rather unlikely given the rate of technological change. Other than buying spares at the outset I don't think there is a solution. Even with spares you would probably have to use the screens in rotation to age them equally.
Eyefinity x6 would probably mean x8 in reality unless you are prepared to sell up and move on when one of the screens develops a fault.
