Could this be the best gaming monitor yet?
http://www.techspot.com/news/37784-a...d-monitor.html
- 23.6"
- 120Hz
- 2ms response time
- 1920x1080 resolution
- HDMI, DVI and VGA inputs
- 80,000:1 ACM/1,000:1 native contrast ratios
- 300cd/m² brightness

Looks ok too:

I'm not really into the whole 3D Vision thing, but the 120Hz refresh rate at full HD resolution could be a winner for fast FPS games. Presumably a TN panel though and I'm not certain about the colour gamut range either though.
Tempting?
Re: Could this be the best gaming monitor yet?
That stand looks awesome! Reminds me of Transformers.
But.. I bet the price will be about £399 over here, even though it's only $399 for Americans
Re: Could this be the best gaming monitor yet?
Even at the US price it equates to around £250!!
I would not pay £250 for a monitor with a TN panel when a monitor with an IPS panel like the NEC MultiSync EA231WMi can be had for well under £300:

Re: Could this be the best gaming monitor yet?
Aye, but with a 14ms response time it's probably not the best choice for a gamer though.

Or to put what you just said correctly

It seems fine to me:
http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/201...ync-ea231wmi/1
Many of us monitors with PVA,MVA and IPS panels can play games perfectly fine.
The review says the following:
"Our input lag test revealed no issues either, with the NEC keeping up to the millisecond with our virtually input lag-free Dell 3008WFP-HC control monitor. While we were worried that the quoted 14ms response time would lead to blurry images and ghosting in games, the NEC displayed roughly the same level of lag as the HP - it was fine, if not exceptional. "
The HP monitor the review is referring to is the HP LP2475w.

We're looking at an AWESOME screen here in design, and has a 120Hz refresh rate.
So, this is like offering DDR3 RAM cos it's better at the job to someone who has a DDR2 board. Yes, it's better, but it doesn't suit the job! (3D)
Re: Could this be the best gaming monitor yet?
The monitors with IPS panels tend to quote very conservative response times whereas a lot of monitors with TN panels tend to emphasise(or even exaggerate) response time as this is the only good thing about them and their cheapness over monitors using PVA,MVA and IPS panel types.
It is the same marketing with Hifi where cheap micro systems are often quoted as having hundreds of watts of power with massive THD.
The same goes with cameras where a £125 compact can have 12MP and a £300 dSLR "only" having 10MP.
If the Acer had a DisplayPort connection it maybe more exciting but it does note even have this and it is meant to be a monitor for gamers!!
The NEC has DisplayPort. It probably makes this monitor ideal for an Eyefinity setup especially due to the better viewing angles too of having an IPS panel.
Re: Could this be the best gaming monitor yet?
I'm waiting for large 3D monitors to appear, but this is purely because I've used a 40" Samsung TV with HDMI as a monitor running at 1920 x 1080 for a while and got used to that :)
Re: Could this be the best gaming monitor yet?
This is what TFT Central have to conclude about the NEC that CAT mentioned:
Quote:
Overall the NEC fairs very well I think and comes out top in many of the comparisons with its popular rivals, the Dell U2410 and HP LP2475W. It offers superior performance in some areas, but doesn't have it all and has a few disappointing drawbacks though in my opinion. The lack of some interface options like HDMI is a shame I think and you're a bit limited with what the EA231WMi offers here. There's no extended gamut if you want to work with extended colour spaces and responsiveness is not quite up to modern standards unfortunately. The panel uniformity is fairly poor as well, and from what I've read this seems to be a fairly common problem at the moment. This could well vary from stock to stock and improve with future revisions but it's a quality control issue which is a little disappointing.
Having said all this, the screen offers a very competitive price and some of the best performance we have seen when it comes to colour accuracy, black depth and contrast. Even though pixel responsiveness is a little slow, the input lag is very good and so this screen should still be fine for many gamers. Viewing angles, office application and movies are all very good thanks to the IPS panel technology and performance of the panel. All in all, it is a very keenly priced screen with some very good performance across the board. A 1080 HD resolution screen with an H-IPS panel at this price is well worth a look, and although it lacks a few extra features you will see from some more expensive competing models, I still feel it's an excellent screen.
Hmmm, the decision of what monitor to buy gets harder all the time.
Re: Could this be the best gaming monitor yet?
TBH,the Acer does look funkier!!
Re: Could this be the best gaming monitor yet?
Horses for courses (as usual!)
Got to agree with CAT on the response times though.....hardcore gamer here and all the decent non-TN panels I have used have no problems at all. No ghosting, no lag.
Re: Could this be the best gaming monitor yet?
I am quite happy that IPS panel technology is now filtering down to cheaper displays.
Cheaper 8 bit panels FTW!!
Re: Could this be the best gaming monitor yet?
This is the first review I've seen of the monitor:
http://www.digitalversus.com/article-357-7352-38.html
Looks like it is the best monitor on the market for lag / responsiveness, even if does have the usual limitations of a TN panel.

Well at 120hz this can be used for 3d with nvidia's system.
Personally I'd prefur the non-flickering system as used in the Zalman ZM-M220W monitor.

Well I finally gave in and bought one of these bad boys. It's now sitting under my desk at work waiting for me to get home and plug it in. Can't wait! I'm expecting big things compared to my ancient 17" job.
