    Flickering Shadows

See my system specs for more info...

Pretty much I have a GTX 285 and a good rig, I play games on full settings with no lag, but in a lot of games I notice artifact in the shadows which is extremely annoying. I have no idea what a high-definition smooth shadow looks like.

For example, in Oblivion, when you enter dialogue with someone for example, and there is a shadow on their face, it appears in tiny blocks rather than smoothing out realistically, it is like a kid drew the shadow. Also whenever the shadow would move, rather than blending and moving smoothly, it chops its way through the color pallet. This is extremely noticable on Empire: Total War where the shadows are constantly chopping and flickering.... I've tried troubleshooting by adjusting many different graphics propeties but nothing seems to help unless I turn shadows off (Which is lame)

Anyone know this problem? I've read other people had this problem but I haven't found a solution yet.

    Re: Flickering Shadows

    Is this new or recent?

I found flickering issues a while back and found a driver updated sorted it out.

But you are talking about games that have been around for a while now so if drivers are reasonably recent, I wouldn't expect it to be a driver problem.

I have tried many different drivers, and have installed them all properly with driversweeper.

I have noticed this problem ever since I built this machine and I have read many other people having this issue with different video cards, ATI and Nvidia both... I just haven't been able to find out the source of the problem.

I read once that someone said it could be due to the GPU being too powerful for the game and it needs to be underclocked... how is that possible.

I suspect it is a directX issue or something to do with the shadow mechanics... I have DX11

It is just strange how sharp and ugly the shadows are.
