BFG 8800GT OC - how to get shroud off??

I want to get the shroud off of my BFG 8800GT OC card, but can't seem to work out how.

Do I need to remove the entire heatsink assembly?

They have taken one apart on techpowerup.

By the shroud I presume you mean the metal cover (technical terms is not my speciality); if so it looks like there are some screws in the side:-

Re: BFG 8800GT OC - how to get shroud off??

Seems theres no screws on the side, seems to be tabs on the heatsink, but i cant see a way to get the cover (over the top of the heatsink/fan with the BFG/Geforce graphic on it) off without putting a lot of force on it, which i'm a little reluctant to do.

Re: BFG 8800GT OC - how to get shroud off??

    The same cooler design though?

Maybe you can lever them away from the heatsink body and; up and over the tabs?

    Not much help I'm afraid

Re: BFG 8800GT OC - how to get shroud off??

fairly close, but not close enough to be the same in terms of getting it off. I've removed the label to see if there was screws under it to no avail.

I'll have to see if i can manage to lever it past the tabs. If all else fails I guess I can just unscrew the whole assembly (i've got a accelero twin turbo for it anyhow), but was wanting to give it a clean etc to see if the temps go back to being somewhere better than 90+ degrees C under load (Titan Quest on high res), which really isn't healthy for the card!

If it reduces the temps to a more sensible level at least whilst I'm setting Linux and Windows 7 up on the machine still means I could safely make use of games too till i change the cooler properly...

Re: BFG 8800GT OC - how to get shroud off??

the 8800GT OCs do run that hot with the stock cooler, I think with very good case air flow mine gets up to about 82C

Re: BFG 8800GT OC - how to get shroud off??

If it's the stock cooler then yes you have to remove the whole cooler from the card, there's screws on the back of the cooler that hold the shroud on if I remember correctly.

    That's a stock cooler

The big question is Why are you doing this?

is it because you have the original small blower version? and you're looking to mod/replace it?

EDIT:I was thinking of the 8800gts 512mb cooler, the 8800gt does indeed screw in from the sides, not the back

Re: BFG 8800GT OC - how to get shroud off??

I want to clean it out as it is full of dust i reckon, what with it being used for a couple of years now.

I guess I'll just have to take the whole heat sink off, I was going to replace the cooler anyhow with an after market one i got recently for it to keep the temps and noise down a bit better till such time as i can upgrade to a better card (post-fermi launch).
