Personally I would say its a side-ways upgrade. The 5770's perform equal to or less than 4870's, albeit using a lot less power. I also think they are overpriced for what they are.
Agreed performance is similar to a 4870, although I think the 4870 is marginally faster.
However with the 5770 you get DX11, less power consumption and so should be quieter in theory.
So performance over a 4850 won't be stellar, unless you're desperate for DX11
If you have the original single slot cooler 4850 then yes it'll be quieter and a bit faster.
However an aftermarket cooler for the 4850 would probably be a better & cheaper option to reduce the noise.
Something like the Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo Pro should bring down the noise a load and is only £25

Even better is the version without fans:

I have this on my Sapphire 4850 and the temps went down by around 15 degrees compared to the stock HSF, and it's now silent too. Win win. Interestingly though AC now suggest you use the version with fans. Go figure.
performance... negligible, though I can't spell that...
but power draw will be a LOT lower, especially in 2d work, so if the 4850 will sell for sensible money you'll make a few quid per year saving on electricity.
From some reviews though the 5770 does clock quite a bit better than the 4870, up to 1ghz on the core on nearly every card with some extra voltage. It seems to push it up to stock 4890 performance.
How much would it cost to change? Maybe offset it a bit by selling your 4850.
I am using that too, but I've attached a low RPM 12cm fan to it. Result is that I can't hear it, yet still maintain a bit of airflow. I don't think I can really go back to stock fans now (every graphic cards I've used so far are either quite noisy, noisy or very noisy.. with the exception of a passive GeForce 2 MX).
answer ATI HD 5770 is the much better card by miles.... :)
Or wait another 2 weeks for the HD5830 to come out
its cool, i went for the new cooler :)
Or Spend £80 Quid and Buy an ATI HD 5670 still DX11 card which can handle many games...
However, spend the extra £30 if you can afford and stick with the ATI HD 5770 with FREE DIRT 2 Game.
But the 5670 is a good step down in performance from a 4850, there's virtually no dx11 games and with the increased graphical demands the 5760 is going to struggle even more.
You're also looking a £120 for the cheapest 5770 vs £25 for an aftermarket cooler to make the card quiet, which is what the OP asked for, performance gain was just an added bonus not a requirement.
If you've already got a 4850, then I'd say there's no point upgrading to a 5770 so soon really, perhaps in the future when 5770s get so cheap that you could just get 2 and run them in CrossFire but at this point in time, no it's not worth it.
I went from 4770 to 5770 and to be honest I see almost no benefits, slightly better performance but the 5770 is actually hotter and therefore louder in games.
