Any probs going from nvidia to ati?

First off sorry if this has been asked before.

I'm thinking of jumping ship from nvidia (I've only ever used nvidia) and getting to grips with the dx11 goodness on offer from ati.

Has anybody encounterd issues doing this driver wise? I've heard that I may have to re-format my hdd then install the new card and drivers - is this needed or can I just bang the new card in and get on with it?

    Thanks in advance

It's easy. Completely uninstall the drivers for your NVIDIA card first of all, then replace it with the ATI card and then install the new ATI drivers. No need to re-format your HDD.

No you'll be all right if you just delete the nvidia drivers (and delete them properly, I believe there are programs which can do so but you'll have to ask someone else for that!), install the ATI drivers and you'll be away.

I wouldn't expect anything inherently tricky in switching brand.

Re: Any probs going from nvidia to ati?

You need to uninstall the current drivers, reboot into safe mode and use drivecleaner or driver sweeper to remove any left over bits. (do not let windows try to reinstall the graphics card drivers)
Then turn off, swap over the cards, reboot and install the new drivers.

The main issue you can get is bits of the old drivers left over/squirlled away by windows causing conflicts.
Windows has the bad habit of hanging onto old bits of drivers and automatically using them with the new card.

Normally the olny major wipe and reinstall windows issues I have is when changeing motherboard.

Re: Any probs going from nvidia to ati?

ATI drivers require the .net framework to be installed that's the only real difference. Last time I used them was with an x1950 pro (little dissapointed in it as it ran hot but at the time the equivalent new cards, 8600gts were crap) and they were good.

I don't believe that is true. .Net framework is required for CCC - Catalyst Control Center (The ATI drivers are called "Catalyst"). You can download just the drivers, and not have the bloated UI, if you aren't going to mess with any of the settings.

I've just moved from nVidia (8800GTX) to ATI (HD5850) with no problem:

    - Uninstall the nVidia card in Windows
    - Boot to Safe Mood, run Drive Cleaner Pro to remove any nVidia traces
    - Shutdown, install ATI card
    - Boot up, and install drivers

(This was in Windows XP 32bit Pro).

    Muts.
