Would this PSU be good enough to run an HD3870 or X1900GT??

I am thinking of re-using my Shuttle PC40 250W PSU for a new mini ITX build. I would be re-using my old E4300(65W TDP) and 2GB to 4GB of DDR2,with one hard disk and perhaps an optical drive. I would need an adaptor to convert one of the molex power connectors to a PCI-E power connector. The PSU already has SATA power connectors luckily!

The PSU used to run an XP2800(68.3W TDP) and a 6800LE unlocked to 16 pipelines(it needed a molex power connector).

Here are the specifications of the PSU:

    12V line - 16A
    3.3V line - 18A
    5V line - 19A

The combined maximum ouput of the 3.3V and 5V lines is 105W.

I have a feeling that I may need to either get a higher wattage 1U PSU or an HD4670.

75W max draw on the X1900 and 83W on the 3870.

6800 draws 55W with the Ultra drawing 72W.

Can't see why not; old PSU may be risking it a bit. Would be interested to see what the PSU calculaters say.

The computer has not really had a huge amount of usage TBH! I bought the Shuttle barebones brand new in September 2005 and used it for around a year until I bought my current SD37P2. I hardly used it for the next two years until it was converted into a server in Septermber 2007 and was used for around year and at that point it was running using the onboard graphics.

The HD3870 I have is the GDDR4 model which should consume less power than the GDDR3 version.

The next best card I have to hand is an 8500GT though!!

The most demanding game that this will play is probably Supreme Commander on a 15" XGA monitor when I visit some friends. I know it will run fine on a E6300 and a 8600GT and also on a MacBook Air with the 9300M IGP.

Re: Would this PSU be good enough to run an HD3870 or X1900GT??

TDP on a 3870 is meant to be about 110W. Your 12v line can pump out roughly 200W on its own, and I reckon your planned rig will probably draw a little more than 200W. So it'd be tight, but I reckon you might be OK.

That said, it looks like that PSU pushes a lot of power through its lower voltage rails (in keeping with the fact the many CPUs used to draw from those rails rather than the 12V), so I don't know how it'd cope with a newer system...

I had a look on Lin-ITX and many of the 1U PSUs they list are not that better TBH in regards to the amount of power they can supply on the 12V lines:

    Edit:

    I just noticed this PSU:

    http://linitx.com/viewproduct.php?prodid=12538

It seems to have two 12V lines:

    It is very expensive though!!
