First HD5830 review!

The card seems to be 10% to 20% slower than an HD5850 1GB,uses an HD5870 PCB and has similar power consumption to an HD5850 1GB.

The fact that this card still uses a pair of PCI-E power connectors and an HD5870 PCB makes it distinctively underwhelming IMHO!!

Hopefully ATI will release an HD5790 at some point.

Looking at the graphs I think I'm going to stick with my GTX 260 until at least Christmas time. The GPU-Z screenshot says it only has a 128-bit bus, and the bandwidth seems awfully low - down to it not being fully supported yet maybe ?

Not that I can understand alot but it seems to use the same power as the 5850. Overclock from 800/1000 to 951/1250 seems pretty good. With the ram being rated at 1250 makes it a free OC! All this on that decidadly dodgy looking XFX cooler.

IMO the price is going to be the decider. It will beat the GTX275 on price and does better on performance/power. Not ground breaking though as previously stated.

Shame the card has not been compared directly to a 5770 to see what advantage it has over the card below it.

According to that review, this card is barely better than the GTX 260 I already have..

Nothing for me to upgrade to now, until the HD 5850 comes down to around £150 (xmas?)..

Why is this a surprise to anyone??
The 5850 is basically the same gpu as the 5870 with some clusters masked off.

If the price and performance is in between the 5850 and 5770, did people think it was going to out perform the 5870 and yet cost half the price?

The thing that has got me down is if it has only 16 ROPs and 128bit memory.
There was an interesting artical some place where a 5870 was underclocked to the level of the 5850 and they performed almost the same.
Which goes to show that in most current games the it's the effects and not sheer polygon count that is becoming the key feature.

Why I was hoping it was just more masked off clusters with full 32rops and 256bit memory that would then show the real truth as to how many streams are actually needed.

All this on that decidadly dodgy looking XFX cooler.

if it's small enough it could be a kicker...

I'm hoping we can move onto them Enermax 385W PSU's soon while maintaining the performance equivalent of a rig built around a 550W or so PSU.

And considering this looks like a binned 5870 gpu on a 5850 pcb with clocks between the 5870 and 5850 I'm not surprised it uses more power, probably got some iffy transistors in there which require higher voltage to remain stable.

I'm going to wait and see if there is a 5 series refresh in response to the GTX480. Hoping to buy a replacement for my 9600gt in the ensuing price wars which performs like a 5770 for ~£80.
