GDDR5 Power Consumption and speed throttling

If anyone has a mains power meter.. and an AMD/ATI card with GDDR5...

try using the overclocking tool in CCC to UNDERCLOCK the ram as far as it will go...

cos on my 4870, though thr core drops.. the ram doesn't in 2d.

And when I force it... it saves 20w

So.. do the newer cards drop ther ram speed? Cos I'm shocked how much power it uses for no reason

Yes, this is a known 'feature' of the first gen of GDDR5 as used in the 4870. Newer generations can power down, as seen in the lower idle power of the 5000 series cards.

You love your little energy meter thing don't ya Zak?

I measured my idle 2D clocks compared to my idle 3D gaming clocks and the power draw was about 50W less, both at idle. 50W is a huge amount by just dropping the clocks.

Re: GDDR5 Power Consumption and speed throttling

how accurate is the temperature reading in CCC?

underclocked sapphire 4870 to GPU 500Mhz, memory 450Mhz (GPU should be 750, memory 900) and it says 30C with 0 fan speed. its 37C normally at idle also with 0 fan speed.

there is an enermax twister pointing at it though 12.2C room temp. (yes i am cold )

    .
    yes my friend.. I do

I've got a new one,. it's ntr working.. and a replacement is on the way....
£10 - £20 on a device like that makes it's money back in a few days....

but as time goes by I've got better at using it, and now spend more time tweaking.. and this GDDR5 thing has bugged me for ages.

I'm glad Kal has pointed out the newer range power settings.. BUT buyer Beware.. someone has to decide to implement it.

And I post ths subjkect because id thge 5830 reiew post is to be believed.. the card uses more power than a 5850 and that's all wrong in my view.

Someone needs to IMPLEMENT these technoloies and it's not ALL justr driver based.. you need someone to turn on the option and create the switch for the driver to find.

Cheap Speakers for a PC £7 and 9w power use with no sound
Nicer Speakers for a PC £15 and 3w power use flat out.. sounding better...

it occurs all around us.. spend and save.

So... anyone else wanna do a test?

I think that people always concentrate on CPU power consumption but seem to forget about one essential component for most computers - the monitor!!

I think this new LED BenQ one uses 34W compared too the one it replaces which used around 70W. I'll check and confirm!
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

I took power usage into consideration when I was buying my monitor. Mine only uses 41W when on, and 0.3W when on standby.

I really wish the "how much it cost this week" feature would work on my power tester thing . I'd quite like to know how much my computer, or anything else for that matter, would cost to run for a week.
