    XFX's Fermi punishment by NVIDIA

According to Fudzilla apparently XFX are not getting any allocation of Fermi cards at launch as a punishment for deciding to also sell ATI cards.

    http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/18278/1/

If it's true, that's really crazy. They must think their new chip is the equivalent of a gift from heaven

I'm not sure it's true though - there are other AIBs that sell cards from both chip manufacturers that seem to have allocation (eg: Asus, Gigabyte, MSI) - so why punish just XFX?

I guess it must be because XFX were previously Nvidia only. A rather petulant move on Nvidias part, really.

Re: XFX's Fermi punishment by NVIDIA

Didn't Intel get done for doing something like that? I don't think it's particularly clever given that I don't think the card being will sell by the tons, and it doesn't put them in a good light. Then again, IF stocks are really limited, yes, I do think it makes sense to give preferential treatments to those who would do the same (i.e. stick with you).

If that was the case surely a smaller allocation is the answer rather than no allocation?

Re: XFX's Fermi punishment by NVIDIA

Depends really... if it hurts sales because people want XFX cards and can't get them, then nVidia's made a bit of a mistake there.

I get the impression that most people aren't picky about the manufacturer though, so I doubt that'll happen.

Re: XFX's Fermi punishment by NVIDIA

Well XFX are hardly gonna be bothered, are they?

They're doing extremely well in the ATI market and they've moved into doing PSUs..
NVIDIAs cards aren't gonna sell all that well until they sort out the yields and get the heat down anyway..

    So yeah.. NVIDIOTS...

I read elsewhere that XFX chose not to sell anything GF100 based...

    It's 4.98*

And it's the kind of thing Nvidia complain about repeatedly when it comes to Atom processors and chipsets.

I still think it depends. Let's say take this stupidly simplified scenario:

    Company N produces 100 units.

Company A (exclusive partner) ask for 60
Company B (exclusive partner) ask for 60
Company C (who also sell competing products ask for 30)

Under such circumstance, I don't think it's necessarily 'wrong' for the partners who have been loyal to you first, they depend more on you, and you want to show that you value their exclusive customs.

Without knowing the details behind the scene I am not saying that this is happening, merely that merely giving an example of the 'IF' condition. If nVidia has no intention to EVER supply Fermi to XFX, then it would look dodgy (and I dare say quite stupid in this climate and the position of their latest product, given that a sale is a sale).

I'd like to see how Nvidia responds to this because that's really poor marketing right there.
