I would possibly consider a water-cooled GTX480, but otherwise not interested in them at all.
In my case, ANY card I get would end up watercooled - so thermals aren't an issue for me. Price is though, and sadly that makes the nVidia card some 100 quid over the odds.
Although I would guess a bit of tongue n cheek here. It would be their choice whether informed or not, informing them and others of the technical/cost/ aspects would be the way go . This ati/nvidia fanaticism is a total mystery to me, for me it is simple ati/nvidia amd/intel best value/performance gets my money every time. In the parts drawer my graphics count is 2xX800 GTO²/1x7900gt/1x6200. A few months ago went from my 3 yr old 8800gts to a 4870
As above, it's not about brands for me it's about value/bang per buck/performance etc. But in those terms Nvidia has failed pretty badly with these cards...
I've bought a scan system with one in. It hasn't arrived yet scan said they might get 20 or so when they come in.
Hope you don't have to wait too long. Some places are reporting the next batch aren't expected until May:

Mind you, I expect orders for systems with 480s will take priority over individual card pre-orders when stock arrives.
Given that anyone who uses this forum (so has presumably read about how underwhelming, overheated and power-hungry the card is) *and* has pre-ordered a GTX4480 must have more money than sense, the appropriate response would be to befriend them then sponge off them for as long as possible.
Surely?
come on, I can't be the only sociopath on Hexus...
LOL I thought i'd give it a go as I only buy a new PC every few years so I thought I may as well have the latest thing. Reading the old ATI stuff when it was launched people complained a lot and when the drivers got better people stopped complaining. Some sites say its heat issues have been overstated anyway.
I'm used to heat I had one of the first xbox 360's and after a decent session on that it was like an oven.
I fancy the idea of being able to add another one at a later date if I need to and yea have almost been down the 5870/5970 route but as the nvidia was priced in the middle of the 2 I thought I'd take my chances. Apparently if you do put em in sli then the performance gain is 91% (apparently) but I can't see me ever having to do it.....yet. Scan reckon they'll be able to deliver on the 24th
Well it is your choice - you could always have added another one/two 5*** cards at a later date as well (though I tend to believe that architectural improvements make this a less attractive option than simply selling the old card and getting the new gen card/s).
Do keep us informed of how the order progresses and when you get your hands on what will be a very nice system (it's only by comparison with other things that the 480 is considered poor.. without a yardstick it's still a very impressive feat of engineering).
For most people though, this sums it up (scan and other places at least had the 'decency' to keep slipping their due dates )

because he's got a retail version of the card with new drivers, and he's also got a high end ati rig - and the temperatures of the card don't seem too ott
