Question about power consumption with crossfire

Just wondered when cards are used in corssfire does one not kick in until you are gaming ot you actually need it ?. Just having both cards running all the time would burn electricity thats all

I am thinking of adding another 5870

Crossfire 5870s appears to add about 36 watts when idle, as opposed to a single 5870. I'm afraid I don't know enough to tell you why you can't just power one down when it's not needed.
