Question what graphics card on 300w?

Our computer has got 300w power unit. Buying a new one is not an option because we just got it replaced but my dad, he didn't know they were putting in a 300w. So my question is, whats the most expensive, stable and fast card u can run on 300w power supply. We're currenly running a PNY fx5600xt. Thanks for any advice.John.

I think it depends on the brand of the PSU. A decent one, like Antec, is better than a generic (or Q-Tec) PSU. I don't personally know the power requirements of different graphics cards, although I would quickly recommend a 9800 Pro.

You might need a better PSU for the next generation of cards anyway, since nVidia are making claims you need something like a 480W PSU for the 6800.

well.. my 300w couldn't cope with a raddy 9000 previous to that I only had a geforce 2... but deffo 9000 tripped it out. May have been because the PSU was ancient anyway, but there ya go... you could try one of those, might work on your machine.. 'course, dpened what other hardware you got - I have two hard disks and 2 optical drives... so maybe..

Pretty much any current card, providing its a half decent healthy PSU and as long as you aren't running too many IDE devices

I can't replace it because my Dad says we'll get a new computer next year but he won't update things like the power unit or motherboad because we can't intall them but if i payed for a graphics card. I was thinking in terms of a 9600xt because they will drop in price dramatically soon because they will be obsolite. Any other suggestions? Thanks for your quick replies!

    Well I've got a 250watter powering a Radeon 9000.

I reckon a 9600 Pro would work in that thing, providing it's at least a resasonable 300watt PSU.

I used a 9600xt with a generic 300w psu for months with no problems whatsoever. Go for a 9600xt or pro then. As long as the card doesnt have a molex adapater and drwas all its power from the mobo you should be fine.
