    Sapphire 4870 fan control problem

My problem relates to the following item - SAPPHIRE HD 4870 512MB
    http://www.sapphiretech.com/presenta...000101&pid=174

I have the most up to date ATI drivers and catalyst control program.

If I leave fan speed setting to automatic, the fan speed never goes below 33% , even though
in manual mode I can set at 20% which is a lot quieter. At 20% fan speed the temps don't go over 50 unless I play a game, in which case it gets too hot, so I leave the automatic fan speed on.

Anyone know why the fan speed won't go down to 20% in automatic mode, I want this as my system is very quiet and the fan on the GPU is the only thing making noise (at 33%)

    Cheers

You could use ATI Tray Tools to map your own automatic temperature controlled fan settings.

Not solved. That program caused errors with Punk Blaster in games. I kept getting kicked for invalid drivers. The ATI tool program was the source, back to starting point.

As mentioned, rivatuner is the other tool that's good for this sort of thing, though I never got on with it quite as well as ATT.

Re: Sapphire 4870 fan control problem

ATT gives me artifacts occasionally on boot up. I underclock to 200/400 so I am not sure if this effecting anything. It plays guildwars fine at these settings; any lower and it starts artifacting a little. It just occasionally goes funky on startup.

Apparently underclocking the DDR5 is a big heat/energy saver. Undervolting works as well but I have non-reference PCB.

Don't forget that the DDR5 used in the 4870s isn't very amenable to powersaving - there's a reason AMD don't underclock them when idle. (Unlike the DDR5 in the 5*** series).
