    Is Nvidia ahead?

I would like to ask the panel. Given that Nvidia has given us 3D gaming physx and Cuda. Could it be considered that Nvidia is currently ahead.

Please take into consideration I have a gtx480 running at factory settings running my games in 3d.

Feel free to flame me for not having an ati graphics card and having a normal display.

My current feelings are if you want to game as you always have buy ati. If you really want something different buy Nvidia - discuss

    Re: Is Nvidia ahead?

I dont think Nvidia are ahead, not when you consider what they are selling and to whom. Imo Ati still have all bases covered with their range of cards, from budget to enthusiast and are still cheaper, they may not have some of the sparkly bits that Nvidia have thrown at their cards, but to be honest how many people care? I certainly don`t, for me it`s more important that the price is right and right now that is the 5850.

I`m not an Ati fanboy btw, currently my ageing rig has an Nvidia xfx 7800GS AGP card in it, but when i upgrade to pci-e it will be a 5850.

    Re: Is Nvidia ahead?

Out of 124 Hexus members in this poll 95 will not spend more than £200 on a graphics card and a further 18 will spend between £200 to £300:

    http://forums.hexus.net/graphics-car...hics-card.html

Nvidia has no new DX11 parts under £250 in the UK ATM. From my own experience most gamers I know will not spend over £150 on a graphics card.

Why take that into consideration? Unless you're praying that we don't want to hurt your feelings and therefore back you up in your assertion that the nVidia solution is better?

Feel free to flame me for not having an ati graphics card and having a normal display.
Nobody wants to "flame you for not having an ati graphics card". I don't think anybody here really cares that much, if you've got the card you want that does what you want it to, then that's fine. The issue is that ATI has been the obvious choice for the last few months, and therefore, if asked, people here are more likely to recommend ATI. And people like me are more likely to deride nVidia because their tactics of late have been so pathetic. Renaming and rehashing old products, using Physx and CUDA as an excuse to pretend they're ahead, and then coming to market eventually with an overhyped, overly-powerhungry, overly-hot, late, and averagely performing graphics card. And to think I used to be an nVidia fanboy...

My current feelings are if you want to game as you always have buy ati. If you really want something different buy Nvidia - discuss
There's no discussion to be had here. Your comment here indicates fully what you think - that ATI is the best graphics card, bang for buck, so you "have [to] buy". And that you think 3D, Physx and CUDA makes up for all the deficiencies of the nVidia card.

Why discuss it? You know what the situation is, and you've made your personal decision - which you're trying to impose on other people by the very nature of what you're saying. If you just want to know what people think, then just search Physx or Rollo in the forums and you'll get a fairly decent idea. I don't think anybody's up for yet another "nVidia ROOLz!!!oneoneroflcopter" thread.

I think this is a moot point. It makes no difference to my what you have unless you want me to vindicate your purchase of an nVidia card or gaming preferance? In any case, if you are happy with your purchase and enjoy the games you play, then that's peachy.

Totally disagree. nVidia produce GPUs that are stonkingly great for playing games on, just as ATi do. It all comes down to whether you feel the feature set from both vendors (including hardware intrinsic features such as power/heat/noise) are worth the cost of the card for the purpose to which you are going to apply it.
I personally believe that you buy a graphics card to render graphics, and I don't need CUDA, 3D, hardware PhysX. The remaining features can be obtained from a cheaper, quieter, arguably slower card from ATi. However the cost of the ATi card tips the balance for me.

    Re: Is Nvidia ahead?

Actually ATI cards do support 3D and also there is ATI Stream too. It is just that the support for the Nvidia equivalents is better ATM.

Anyway, I just hope Nvidia can have some competitive midrange and budget cards soon as the HD5770 1GB has gone up in price since launch!

    Re: Is Nvidia ahead?

On features, it depend on how you weight them, but I'd say that they have the edge. Bang for buck, they are behind. In market share, they are ahead overall, but behind when it comes to DX11 cards (unsurprisingly given that they only recently entered the market).
