Why I wont buy NVIDIA graphics cards

Im amazed that nvidia are continuing to do this, heres the link:
    http://www.driverheaven.net/showthre...threadid=44253
    http://www.driverheaven.net/showthre...rce+6800+ultra

Edit - didnt read the whole thread, so Im unsure what to think of the above, but still want opinions...

I have a question (wont bother with a poll, just post yes or no and a reson/opinion if you can be arsed...)

Would you buy a graphics card for slightly higher performance even though you would be risking image quality, which you will likely not be able to change?

this is one of the resons i would buy a 9800xt over a 6800U. I still think the R420 will be faster in current games, probly future ones aswell, even though it lacks the newer version 3 pixel shaders.

The trust factor was lost with nVidia ages ago, when you lose a customers trust it's near impossible to regain it.

    <beep> imo.

I am sorry you guys are on crack.

you buy the fastest part - what you are coming out is something which is beyond all comprension.

You are also linking an ATi fan boy site - and yes some of the points are valid. But it is not up to NVIDIA what developers do with the kit.

The Image Quality thing - I would wait before making assumptions we are working on something

Trust factor was still lost a long time ago with nvidia, not only with the geforce range but with the nforce2 range aswell for those that really know about the list of issues with the chipset and owning one doesn't mean you know rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbish because the facts are clear, there's a good few features that still don't work properly or up to acceptable standard, took them 7 months after launch to get the RAID working without corruption, yes it was an add on chip but it was advertised by nvidia and therefore is their responsibility. Why do you think there're so many nforce 'remixes' of drivers all of the net, because they haven't released one pack worthy of retail distribution, the latest v3.13 for example has an ethernet driver that causes stupid cpu utilization when transfering large files.

They'll need to release a good few cards before i can start to trust them again after their recent escapades.

I have no real alliance to ether side. I currently use ATI because I liked cost/performance ratio. However, I may change to Nvidia if ATi's 64 bit & Linux drivers don't improve as I'm dual booting 64bit Windows & Linux.
I must admit Nvidia lost a few brownie points with the heat issues on some cards & driver tweaking in the past, but they are still one of the most innovative tech companies around at the moment.
    Time, as always will tell.

I've always been an ATI person but latly ATI Driver support seems to be going on a major downward spiral for ALL formats, not just Linux. In my next build I will seriously be considering Nvidia for the first time in a while.

    What are you talking about?
ATI's Drivers are awsome compared to the 'Tweeked' Nvidia drivers that SUPPOSEVEDLY use PS 1.1 and 2 in Far Cry insted of just PS 2...

Neither company has a perfect record - everyone remembers the absolutely godawful ATi drivers of old in the same way that most will remember the absolute death nvidia cards received in the hl2 benchmarks that were released, and also the "dustbuster" on the frankly awful 5800ultra.

I think I'll wait until the card is properly retail before I pass judgement.

Making a NVidia card act like an R300 was pretty stupid - both companies implement stuff differently so making the crytek engine see an R300 is going to have all sorts of unpredictable results.

I'd have rather seen them use a Geforce FX device ID.

Still, saying that, I don't trust Nvidia. I doubt we can trust ATI either though, but nobody's found a good reason for this yet!

Changing the device ID made it run a different code path - at the moment it is running an NV3X code path and the new patch will bring the nv4X code path in ot play

Wouldn't changing the device ID like they did mkde it try to run a Radeon code path though?

Nope, PS2.0 code path as opposed to the PS1.1 code path it was using when a 6800 was detected.

It's still fairly woolly as it was based on pre-release hardware and beta drivers (like every single other "review" out there at the mo), and until the retail boards and drivers ship everything could change.

David, by nv40 path, I presume you actually mean PS3.0? (Thus giving vNidia something to differentiate with?)
