I would suggest that if you do go for an LCD monitor then get one with an IPS panel.

There are two monitors you should consider in you price range.

The first is the 23" NEC EA231WMi:

    Here is a review:

The second is the 22" Dell 2209WA:

    Here is a review:

The NEC monitor has a 16:9 ratio and a resolution of 1920X1080 and the Dell has a 16:10 ratio and a resolution of 1680X1050.

There is also the 24" HP ZR24W but it has poor black depth:

If you don't go for IPS, go for this:

I understand you do photo editting, but you got to at least give this monitor a look, the price, the style, the output is just very nice hahaha. I think the picture speaks for it self and the price is more than reasonable for a LED backlit monitor! Of course it carries the standard full hd resolution (1080p), 1000:1 contrast ratio. And this peticular one does not come with HDMI, but the BenQ V2420H does. So depends on your needs, do check it out
    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 2 GB DDR2, 500GB SATA-II 7200RPM, nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512mb, BenQ E2200 HD, BenQ G2412HD, Logitech S510 Wireless set, Creative GigaWorks T3 Speakers.
