    4870 x2 upgrade?

    Hi all

I've currently got a 4870 x2 (the asus one with the tri fan cooler). I'm looking for an upgrade and was wondering which of the 5xxx series are better? I'm looking for one thats a bit quieter too when its idleing!

Would the 5850 be a step up??

    Thanks for any help!

Less powerful for sure; the 5870 seems to be on a par with the 4870x2. How confident are you with your modding skills? The 4870x2 has software voltage control; perhaps you could underclock and undervolt it? Might help to turn down the fan speed a bit.

    Re: 4870 x2 upgrade?

Well I also want the card to be faster than my 4870 x2 too.

Think I'll have to save up a bit more for a 5870!

    Re: 4870 x2 upgrade?

if u want to quiet down the 4870x2, i highly recommend this:

    http://www.arctic-cooling.com/catalo...ath=2_&mID=244

also it really does drop the temps significantly so more of an overclock can be done.

The HD5970 would be a big upgrade over an HD4870X2 IMHO.

True, but still noisy. Unless you watercool it....

    Re: 4870 x2 upgrade?

I'm not planning to upgrade any time soon... there just isn't enough of a performance gain to be found in the current-gen cards, sparing the 5970/480 which are too expensive.

A single 5870 won't be significantly faster than your 4870x2. If you want a noticeable jump it will have to be a 480 or 5970. Otherwise, just keep the 4870x2 and watercool it which will cut the noise and temperature in half.

    Re: 4870 x2 upgrade?

Thanks for the advice! I'll just stick with my 4870x2 until the next lot of ATI cards come out! Must be some this year??

From what I understand, the Asus pcb is different from the standard one and doesn't take other coolers or watercooling??

r_j_k_p - Is that fan not just the same as the tri fan cooler that I already have on my card? Or is it meant to be quieter???

    Re: 4870 x2 upgrade?

Even if it is different, there won't be much difference between two tri-fan coolers

not too sure mate, all i know is that it is MUCH quieter than the stock cooling that was on it.
if you wanted silence, you could just change some settings in the Catalyst control centre
