Rumour mill: GTX460 in July
http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/19050/1/
768MB is an odd amount of memory, I guess memory width is scaled with shaders so shouldn't give any suprises in performance but given how the general public are swayed by ram quantity I expect they will lose sales to 1GB ATI cards even when the ATI card is worse :)
240 shaders though, that is the kind of upgrade I am looking for from my old 112 shader 8800.
Re: Rumour mill: GTX460 in July
But how soon will you be able to actually by them? And what price will they sell at? I don't doubt that NVidia can produce a 768Mb card that will outperform an ATI 1Gb card at some things, but whether they can do so at an acceptable price in enough quantity to satisfy demand remains to be seen.
Re: Rumour mill: GTX460 in July
Hopefully this will push the god-awfully priced 5770 down - and be better. I wonder where they're getting this information about it being able to handle a good overclock from, though ?
Re: Rumour mill: GTX460 in July
Supposedly it has a 180W TDP and has 240 stream processors:
http://www.bit-tech.net/news/hardwar...d-launch-dat/1
I hope the TDP figures are wrong though.
Looks like it will probably need a pair of PCI-E power connectors! :(
Re: Rumour mill: GTX460 in July
Sounds distinctly like a bandwidth-hobbled GTX275 to me. Given that the 275 had a 448bit interface on 2.2Gbps DDR3 memory, and NVidia don\'t seem to be able to run DDR5 above about 3.7Gbps, it\'s going to be giving a *lot* of bandwidth away - in fact, it won\'t that far ahead of a stock 5770 due to the much higher clocks ATI can run their DDR5 at. Factor in the smaller framebuffer as well, and I just can\'t see it winning any awards...

Doesn't sound promising starting point does it, though it has exactly half a GTX480 in both stream processors and memory width, so if the clocks are the same it should give half the performance? Not sure how valid that assumption is, but that would give about GTX 260/275 performance.
Lets hope they had enough time to sort the yields on this one so they can at least compete on price.
Re: Rumour mill: GTX460 in July
More rumour, this time from BSN:
http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news...to-school.aspx
They say 240 shaders isn't possible, and their argument makes some sense. 240 is not divisible by 32.
Fermi GF100 is built from blocks of 32 shaders, designed with 512 shaders but with one fused off for give 480.
If GF104 is half a Fermi, then that would give 256 shaders. Assuming yield of that would be pants, you allow for fusing one off to get 224 shaders.
BSN say GF104 has 288 shaders, which implies to me they built it with 320 shaders allowing one to be fused off.
Possible, albeit at the expense of making the chip bigger and costlier; just what Nvidia need :)

Simply put, that's not how their current design works. Each block of 32 shaders is either on or off - like the ATIs SIMDs of 80 shaders. To change the number of shaders in a block would be a significant re-engineering of the architecture...

I don't think they did, but the article isn't brilliantly written ;) Earlier in the article they say the GF104 has 256 shaders (2x 4 clusters of 32). The 288 shader reference appears to be to a theoretical, OEM-only GTX460 (GF104 being planned as a GT460), built from bottom-bin GF100 silicon so nvidia can clear that inventory before a GF100a batch comes in...
Re: Rumour mill: GTX460 in July
Well the simple way would be to halve the SM blocks, so each one is made up of 16 cores drop one cluster and you 240 in total.
The big question for me is what's the ROP count going to be? it's the combination of lower ROP and memory band width that which seems to make the big impact of the 5770 esp with any effect heavy graphics, just pushing filled polys it's not far behind the 5850.
Hopefully this is going to be a better priced card, however with the cost & production issues of the gf100 chips I doubt we'll see these cards that aggressively priced.
As much as I'd like this to be the new 8800gt I doubt it will be.
180TDP :surprised: strapping a TRUE to a graphics card is looking more and more like a good idea.

lol, you are right. I was obviously quite confused by the end of the article :D
180W TDP is unfortunate, but fairly typical for Nvidia I thought. The line that got me was:
"Read, nVidia does not want to have any GF100 inventory when the time for their refresh comes and will get rid of all the three-billion 40nm chips"
3 billion chips??? Wonder what the non typo figure is :)

I think there's a misso rather than a typo - it should read all "3 Billions transistor chips" i.e. all chips having 3 billion transistors - comprising the entire GTX4xx series...
Re: Rumour mill: GTX460 in July
I'm with you Terbinator, I've been holding off upgrading my 8800gt because of the current pricing of the 5770's. It doesn't sit well with me paying £130 for a GPU that was meant to hit the market around the £100 mark, the current exchange rates aren't helping at the moment. I'll welcome any nvidia cards that can spark a bit more competition with regards to pricing.
Re: Rumour mill: GTX460 in July
More rumour, this time from Fudzilla saying it will be 384 shaders, and out on July 12th.
http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/19230/1/
Interesting mention of 336 shader variant, that's exactly 3 times more than my 8800gt :)
Another article on there:
http://www.fudzilla.com/content/view/19206/34/
mentions 256 bit and 192 bit bus variants.
