    Overclocking 9800pro

So i now have an arctic cooler fitted to my lovely new r360 core 9800pro

Im going to try and flash it to xt soon but first i need to be sure it'l run at xt speeds...

What overclock do you have on your 9800pro?

Im just wondering what i should expect and what to aim for.

Im using rage 3d at the moment but if anyone can suggest something better i'l give that a go to.

n00b question here but will the overclock save when i switch the machine off

Certain Bios' have a feature that resets core and memory speeds on reboot, so whether your overclock will save or not is Bios specific.

Radeon 9800XT speeds are 412/365 and i'd use Artifact Tester to confirm there's no artifacts and run 3dmark 5 times looped while watching to see if you can spot any artifacts yourself.

If you want to flash the card to an XT, the guide is on my website linked below.

get the latest omega drivers, which have radlinker, which is best for overclocking imo.

You should get ~425-450mhz core without vmods, dunno about mem.

412 Core, 365 Mem. Stock XT speeds.

That's what I have on my 9800pro with Zalman ZM80-C Heatpipe and 120mm fan. Could go higher I'm sure, but I just flashed it and left it at that.

Power Strip is the dogs blobs for this stuff I find, and yes, if done correctly, the Overclock will stay after a re-boot. (Mine did anyway)

Yse the guide on Layz's site. Worked a treat for me, and took about 30 seconds.

powerstripe is the biggest peice of *sh*te* ive ever used btw. firstly it doesnt detect my card properly, even when it does (older version used to) it had an annoying habbit of crashing, and general bugs...

Radlinker is best imo. When your overclocking its best *if it doesnt apply at boot* that way if you set unstable speeds, it wont f*x*r your card (needing a bios flash). whats the point in having it at 450 at boot anyway, not going to make it boot faster, and radlinker on runs for 1/10th of a second at startup just to apply the settings...

Yeah, but the world doesn't turn around you mate, so just because it was bad for your card, doesn't make it a 'piece of rubbishrubbishrubbishrubbishe'.

I found it very reliable, and it did the job perfectly. Came highly reccomended as well.

I'd advise anyone OCing a card to give it a go.

Not that Radlinker's bad, of course. I used to use that as well, when I was on the Omega drivers, for a while.

Sorry to be a noob but how do you find out if your card has an r360 core?
Likely a 9800SE AIW would have this?

AFAIK, the only way to find out is to actually remove the heatsink and have a look at the GPU. It should have R360 printed on the core.

Nope. 9800SEs came from 9800np/Pro (before the R360 core appeared in 9800s) 'rejects'.

Don't rely on Artifact Tester (the one that ships with the omega drivers anyway), it doesn't actually work at all (at least it doesn't for me anyway), the best thing to do is just run a game for a few minutes, or a tech demo like rthdribl and look for them yourself.

Got my 9800SE AIW to just under XT speeds at the moment, the memory isn't quite up to running at XT speeds for long periods (although some ramsinks might help with that..), not bad for £130

Rod's right only way is to take off the heatsink and wipe off the thermal grease. Its written on the core.

Gona have a to have a go with radlinker. Im using rage 3d at the moment 414 core 366mem and it benches, plays games brilliantly with no artifacts or general silliness. Its a 128mb card with the samsung memory so i will be having a go at flashing it as soon as i stick a floppy in my machine i didnt bother when i built it as i didnt think there was any point

Befire overclocking farcry was running at 1280x1024 medium AA, everything on very high except shadows (medium) and 4 AF and running nice playable framerates.

Not that Radlinker's bad, of course. I used to use that as well, when I was on the Omega drivers, for a while.
Its still badly designed. It has countless bugs that affect several cards not just one, and not restricted to the overclockign but also the custom timings. For example - with dual monitors, doing custom timings on second monitor, then have a break do some other stuff, go back a while later to change it a bit, but instead of applying it for the second monitor, it goes to the first, meaning a reset is in order, becuase that res and timings are not compatable with monitor one. Nowhere does it say its changed to monitor one, as thats on hte other page hidden behind it.

I simply recommend radlinker because it does everything most people need, and does it extremly well without a cluttered up crappy interface with options that you dont need. Also becuase its safer for the card, incase you set the wrong clocks.

Artifact tester is like MANY testing programs. They test well, but they dont put half as much load on the card as needed to make it cause errors. This is the same for ATI tool, which I think works very well, apart from that problem. Run rthdribl for 10 mins first to get the card under load, then use a testing app with that in background. 3dm 2k1 also works very well for detecting mem probelms (car chase no. 2) and 3dm2k3 is v good for core on several tests.
