Gecube HD 3870X2 1GB Dual GPU - replacement?

    Hi all,

I bought the following card in Feb 2008 from ebuyer:

Gecube HD 3870X2 1GB Dual GPU OC Power Gamer Edition Dual DVI HDTV Out PCI-E Graphics Card

I am now getting screen freezes, artifacts followed by the BSOD and a restart, the frequency of these occurrences have increased over the last few days (usually when playing COD MW2) and now the card appears dead. I have recently updated the drivers with no change in the fault.

Is it worth attempting a repair, I am guessing a 12 month warranty is standard, therefore no good.

If I replace, could someone recommend a good card to replace it with, my current hardware is:

    OCZ 4GB Kit (2x2GB) 800MHz/PC2-6400 Memory Platinum Performance CL5 (5-4-4-18)
    Scythe Ninja-PLUS Rev B Socket 478, 754, 940, 775, 939 & AM2 CPU Cooler
    Intel Q6600 Quadcore CPU
    Abit IP-35 S775 MOBO

    Help appreciated!!!!!

Almost certainly not worth repairing, but clear out the cooler incase it's just clogged up with dust and overheating in the summer.

As for replacements, a 5850 would be a decent improvement.

Thanks for the tip on cleaning, I will take a look, although I recently overhauled the CPU cooling and gave the board etc a clean up.

Is there a Nvidia 5850 equivalent?

Sort of either side - there's the 465 which is slower, and the 470 which is faster. Both very hot/power hungry compared to a 5850 though.

+1 for the 5850. It's a really nice card, I got mine at £195 quite a while back which I thought was great value.

Only if you want the GPGPU features are Nvidia worth considering at this end of the market at the moment I believe.

Re: Gecube HD 3870X2 1GB Dual GPU - replacement?

If you can hold off a week or two it might be worth looking at a GTX460, which is a new core revision of Fermi and *might* solve some of the heat and power problems. If it's a "must buy now" situation then the 5850 is money well spent

Just make sure you get the right 460 One version is a new core revision, the other is just a cut down of the same one being used in the 465/470/480. But it'd be too easy to change the model name to help you see the difference

Re: Gecube HD 3870X2 1GB Dual GPU - replacement?

Thanks for all the advice so far. I was wondering what you thought of the more budget conscious choice of the HD4890 or HD5830 1 GB cards? What is your opinion of the SAPPHIRE HD 4850 X2 2GB GDDR3 PCI-E card(s) these are available at c£200.

I have been struggling to find the 5850 for less than £225 (inc. VAT). Any suggestions on where to look?

What sort of price (roughly) is the new core revision of the GTX460 likely to be?
