Is my power supply sufficient for the Geforce 480

    Hia, its my first post

I was considering buying the Asus GTX480 1536MB, for once I just want an amazing graphics card but I am unsure whether my "Corsair 650W TX Series PSU - 120mm Fan, 80+% Efficiency, Single +12V Rail" power supply can handle the card and if it has the right connections because I believe it needs a 8pin and 6pin, I dont know if im right about that? any advice would be appriciated. I really want to avoid buying a new power supply as well.

    with regards, Izzy

From what Nvidia says your specs above seem correct:
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/product...tx_480_us.html

600W should be okay if you have the required number of leads....

Re: Is my power supply sufficient for the Geforce 480

aww cool thanks, I just had a look at the connectors in the box.

    Cable Connectors:
    •20+4pin power connector
    •4+4pin ATX 12V Connector
    •2x 6pin PCI-E VGA card Connectors
    •8x SATA Connectors
    •8x 4pin peripheral Molex Connectors
    •2x Floppy connectors

I would assume I would use the (•4+4pin ATX 12V Connector) and one of the (•2x 6pin PCI-E VGA card Connectors) and that should make up the required connections needed, right? I appologise for being apin about, knowing me I will buy something that won't work my PC lol

    with regards, Izzy

I'm pretty sure the 650TX PCI express connectors are both 6+2 pin types, giving you the required power you need:

    http://www.corsair.com/products/tx/default.aspx

PS - no you can't use the 4+4pin ATX 12V connector for your 480 - that connects into your motherboard

Do not use the 4+4pin with your graphics card !
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

Re: Is my power supply sufficient for the Geforce 480

As I was advised yesterday in my own post it might be worth waiting for the launch of the Fermia
GTX460 on 12/07 (or so rumour has it) and from what I was reading it can supposedly be overclocked to perform well in excess of its factory settings. It's launch might also force ATI cards to come down in price e.g. the HD5850.

If you can wait it might be worth it

Re: Is my power supply sufficient for the Geforce 480

And we may only have to wait 'til next Monday for things to kick off...

    http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news...c1792bvat.aspx

but is this price range going to change the cards at the top?

Edit to add: If they release a 475 variant then that might.

Re: Is my power supply sufficient for the Geforce 480

I was just doing some reaserch about the Fermia GTX460. I think I may wait a while as well. Maybe the introduction of the other graphics card will drive down the prices a little bit for all the ranges. I definetly won't use the 4+4pin ATX 12V Connector lol. thanks again.

    Grammar police: it's Fermi

Anywho, you're right on the other point: waiting a bit would most probably be beneficial to you. You may be even tempted to look at the Radeons, should their price fall
