Basically the GPU has an audio device built on the board. You need to connect your cards HDMI to an input on the amp and then in windows set the ATI HDMI audio device to default, then set up your speakers and you should be good to go.
Ive been doing the same thing on my 4550 for ages.
Hope that helps

I currently am using the dvi out on my card and connecting to to my sony tv with a dvi-hmdi lead. Can I still Use this AND use the hdmi out in the card for audio on the amp? if that makes sense :P
Should be able to, just need to tell Windows to pump sound through that port. Assuming you're on Windows 7 just right click on the speaker icon in the system tray, click 'Playback Devices', find the desired output and click 'Set Default'. If it's not showing up then try unplugging the HDMI from the card and reinserting it. I have this problem quite a lot, seems to happen if the PC boots up while the Amp or TV is off, it thinks the HDMI is disconnected.
Guys im still having no luck with this. When I go to sound propertys in windows it says that the ati HDMI Output is not plugged in. Which it is! Ive tried two different leads as well.
Anyone else got any ideas?
Even when you go into catalyst control centre there is no menu at all for the sound.
