GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
As per title, im going to flog the GTX 260 i have and upgrade to a GTX 460 :) I'm just very unsure which one to get! before i go into it, the pc will be used mainly for gaming on a 22inch screen at a res of 1680 x1050, I think thats the correct res anyway! So yea i'm now stuck on grabing a 768mb or a 1gb, i "sort of" know the difference but unsure if i should bother with the 1gb version? its rare but on ocasions i hook the pc upto my tv (32inch 720 and 1080p capable)
so with that info which would be best suited to me? I've also got to ask about the brand, im tempted (if i go with the 768mb) to just buy the cheapest one there, would there be a difference from me buying the inno3d compared to say the msi?
Thanks guys:rockon:
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
If you can afford it get the 1GB version. It's not just that it's got more memory (which normally only matters at higher resolution) - it also has more bandwidth which means it will be faster at all resolutions.
The only reason I can see for ever choosing the 768MB over the 1GB is if the budget is very tight and getting the 1GB would mean compromising on something else. If the money's it's the 1GB every time, IMNSHO.
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
The 1gb version also have more ROPs (Raster OPerations) and are used in many post processing effects, like Anti Aliasing, filtering, over saturation (part of HDR rendering)
As to which make? pretty much the cheapest is normally fine, esp if it's the stock pcb and cooler
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
As Pob255 says the 1GB version has more ROPs - 32 to the 768MB's 24. To disable 25% of the RAM they have to disable 25% of the memory controllers and thereby you lose 25% of ROP.
See Anandtech for a full, and no doubt more accurate, description.

Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
also worth bearing in mind that NVidia admit that not all these chips will overclock. Manufacturers are prebinning a lot of them so the only way to guarantee getting a card that will do 800MHz plus is sadly to buy a pre-clocked card and see what you can squeeze out of it. You may get lucky with a cheaper card but it depends how thorough the manufacturer's binning process is.
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
Go for the 1gb if possible, they are faster cards
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
Is the 1GB GTX460 a decent upgrade from a HD4870-512?
Looking at Scan they have them as low as £170, if on pre order status only, or £180 in stock.
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
You can get the 465 at scan for £175. Probably better than a 460 1GB i think???
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
No, the 465 is a bad card. You can get a GTX 470 for around £240 atm which may be a better idea or not depending on personal preference :)
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
The GTX 465 is a massivly crippled card, up against the 460 it loses in every benchmark it really is awful. *Correction nearly every benchmark lol, aparently wins in mass effect, ff benchmark*
Personally i would be very tempted by the gainward GTX 460 gs glh, the bump in clocks make a noticably difference, review here : http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/vid...e-gtx-460.html
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
and which brand to go, may I ask?
1gb oc gigabyte or 1gb superoverlocked evga?
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
I've ordered the 1GB EVGA GTX 460 from Scan. Will just see how well it overclocks, even if it doesn't it's gonna perform better than my 512MB HD4870 at stock.
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
Well you will have to let us know how well it overclocks for you! I'm intent on waiting for a little bit before i upgrade, still debating on spending a little and going for an ati card...
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
Will do. Am running a few synthetic and gaming benchmarks over the weekend on the ATI card to have an up to date comparator for the GTX460 which should arrive on Monday.
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
If you're still looking for a 460, then you can now get a 2GB card. Look for the article on the HEXUS homepage.
Re: GTX 460 upgrade! but which one?
I think 2GB of VRAM on a GTX460 is a bit overkill. Anyway, from what I've read stay away from the KFA Galaxy ones because they make an awful racket. Ironically, the reference Nvidia cooler is amongst the best ones available.
