    Upgrade from 4850

    Hey guy's

I've had my 4850 for a while now and feel its time to retire the old girl, now i've still got the same CPU which is the E1400 which I know is a bottleneck and I will get it sorted at some point.

I will have a budget of around £120, maybe more if its worth it and not fussed over ATI or Nvidia just wondering what would be best to get for the money.

    Cheers

    Tom.

How much better is a 5770 than the 4850? the 4850 was better than the 4770 and i haven't really kept up to date with the new cards.

    Re: Upgrade from 4850

5770 = 4870, just less TDP and not enough power to make full use of DX11.
IMO your best going GTX 460 or 5850 for any appreciable difference.

I was thinking about the 5850 but I have to take my 400WPSU into consideration, but considering my system could be powered by a brain, would i get away with the 5850?

    Re: Upgrade from 4850

Well, your don't have that much of a power hog CPU looking at system specs and in which case, your CPU may even bottle neck a 5850 so i would say theres a 50/50 chance you would be fine.

Having a quick look on Wiki the TDP of the 5850 is 150 compared to 110 for the 4850.

    Re: Upgrade from 4850

I've been looking at upgrading my 4850 for some time now and I still can't see a good, value for money upgrade path yet. I don't think there are any low price (£100-150) performance cards available that would be appreciably better than a 4850.

So we're left either paying quite a lot for a 5850 or higher, or my choice, waiting for the next generation of cards. No idea how long that's going to be at the moment though...

    Re: Upgrade from 4850

I went online and did one of the those power draw system thingys which gives the total draw of a system ( don't know if they are correct ) but with a 5850 it comes up at around 330's total draw with every component working at 100%

    What about the 5830?

    Re: Upgrade from 4850

This is GPU only and they seem to have quite good methodology.

I would think about upgrading the rest of my system first. e8400s seem to be quite cheap ca £60 now; not sure if they are compatable with the rest of your system though.

Looks like I will have to go along this route if you lot think that the 5770 or the 5830 is a worth while upgrade for the price.

He says more if its worth it, considering GTX 460's have been going the higher end of £130 it was only right to include it as an option And rude not to include team reds [worthwhile] offerings

    Re: Upgrade from 4850

I would stick with what you have ATM. I have an HD4830 which is fine for most games at 1440X900 and 1680X1050 under both XP and Vista.

The HD5770 will be around 20% to 30% faster than an HD4850 and TBH I don't think it is worth spending £120 to get such a small improvement. The GTS450 which is being released in the next few weeks maybe worth a look at if it is faster than an HD5770.

I would wait until the HD6000 series is released at the end of the year.

I got my 5770 for £85 so from a 4850 to that wasnt a huge gap, meant i could play most games nearly full tilt at 1920x1080 though.

+1, the 4850 is a very capable card and unless you're playing the latest games on a high resolution you should have no problems with it. Also, anything more powerful might make your system very unbalanced, a high performance GPU paired with a budget CPU and 2GB of RAM - you might not see a noticeable increase in performance if the CPU is a bottleneck so it might be worth checking that first and maybe consider upgrading if that is the case, you wouldn't necessarily have to spend much. Also you might consider overclocking the CPU to squeeze some more use out of it, Celerons tend to be very good overclockers.
