    Lightbulb 3D gaming worth it?

Have come into some money recently and will be upgrading my PC. Wondering if anyone has any experience with Nvidia's 3D Vision, whether it's worth the money for the novelty/awesomeness of 3D to get a new monitor/glasses/emitter and all that or if you regret buying the system?

Even if you just tried a mate's system or seen it running at a show / in a shop, would you get it if you could spend the money on it? (Approx £400 for good monitor + Nvidia package)

    Re: 3D gaming worth it?

It really depends on your view of 3D full stop. Ive played it at a mates whos got a gtx 480 and while its impressive even that card doesnt power it that well. So if you do consider it you will probably need an sli rig IMO.

I personally don't really like 3D that much, I think shiny 2D is preferable but thats definately a personal opinion cos I know plenty of people that love 3D.

    Re: 3D gaming worth it?

It depends on the source material. I have a zalman trimon monitor (passive 3d) and when it works well its astounding.

Fable is excellent as is prince of persia sands of time. Oblivion is good. Jedi knight not so much.

The zalman has a reduced resolution and a narrow vertical range of eye movement in 3d mode - refresh is 60hz but it needs to update two panels in 3d mode. Shutter glass systems halve the brightness and need twice the framerate.

The zalman isnt great as a 2d monitor - 120hz monitors for 3d vision are probably better.

Additional passive (polarised) glasses are cheap, shutter glasses are expensive and might not let multiple viewers see the same material.

    Re: 3D gaming worth it?

Had Nvidia 3D vision now for 4 months. Current set up involves a Nvidia 460 GPU but it was OK on a 250GTS. I find it great but initially don't stay on it too long. Work up to longer usage bit by bit. I mainly use it for Flight Sim but it plays COD4 well and there are hundreds of compatible game programmes which it lists. I have not tried a 3D blu-Ray on it yet

Just don't try to use Cyberlink Power DVD 10 Ultra Mark II on Blu-Ray playback with it unless you have a 120Mhz monitor compliant with HDCP--(and I don't think there are any around yet). There is a workaround on this but I am hoping Cyberlink will issue a patch soon.

    Re: 3D gaming worth it?

An interesting take on this from Anandtech recently:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/3842/a...-look-at-120hz

The basic conclusion is that if you play FPS games, then you want a 120Hz monitor regardless of whether you want 3D. In some games the 3D is a nice bonus.

quote: "I spent the first half hour seriously just dragging windows back and forth across the desktop - from a 120Hz display to a 60Hz, stunned at how smooth and different 120Hz was. Yeah, it’s that different."

Why do you need to work up the usage - eyestrain from the shutter glasses?
At least on the passive 3D displays, there's no strain on the eyes.

    Re: 3D gaming worth it?

nvidia 3d vision is good, but needs powerful hardware to run with everything turned upto max, best monitors for it are either the samsung 2233rz which is fantastic value or the alienware aw2310 but the price is mad - you can get it for £375 if you shop hard but of course need the £130 vision kit on top. Scan's £350 samsung bundle is prob the best. I had the Acer as well but the build quality and 2d image is rubbish so wouldn't reccomend it. The new asus is supposed to be good, but it has a glossy screen which I can't see being much good for 3d.

    Re: 3D gaming worth it?

The recent Anandtech review of the Asus suggested it was the best 3D screen hes used thus far.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

    Re: 3D gaming worth it?

I wouldn't do it, £400 is a lot of money... then again it depends if you are a hardcore gamer... if you'll know you'll clock a lot of hours into it then it might just be worth it, but if you won't have time to really play and make it worth the £400 then don't do it. You could put the money to good use somewhere else. Then again it's preference and habits/hobbies/etc.

    EDIT:
But if you have £400 laying around and you could careless + you have nothing else you would rather spend it on, then go for it

    Re: 3D gaming worth it?

zalman trimon monitor if I was going 3d thoes are the monitors I'd go for.
Aparrently you can use them with ati cards with the iZ3d drivers, the flicker free glasses are much nicer to use and multiple people can watch without issue (as long as you're in the viewable angle)
this is actually closer to the system used in cinemas than the normal "nvision" flicker system, although as a down side you get some interlaceing instead.

as to worth it . . . you really need to see a 3d system and test it out before you can judge for yourself, some people love it, some people don't.

    Re: 3D gaming worth it?

I understand the new Acer 245GD is compliant on HDCP at 120 Hz. The Samsung 2233RZ which I have is a first generation 120 Hz monitor and is only HDCP compliant at 60 Hz. As I have said before this can cause problems on running Blu-Ray with PowerDVD10. However the Acer monitor is probably the best buy around right now and compatible with all the software currently available re playback and 3D vision

It is definitely my next 3D monitor. I agree totally with those who have noticed a smoother screen response. That is why TV manufacturers are gradually upping the Hz figure on new screen production. However PC monitors are some way behind. The position is not helped by the fact that retailers may mention in specs that a monitor is HDCP compliant but fail to tell you if that is the case at 60 Hz or 120 Hz. That will change in time I hope

Re Syllopsium's point about eyestrain, I have not had any problems but like all new demands on one's body, especially my aging one, it is best to approach things in stages on a gradual build up.
