£250 for games. LED 24" hdmi/ dvi 1080p or greater and not TN.
I used one of these and it was a whole lot better than the Dell I 24" I was using:

The one above but £16 cheaper
LED ips panel 24" with hdmi.
I dont think £250 is enough for an IPS panel, they are £300/400+ and when your asking for LED aswell then it could be even more expensive. Dell do some nice IPS panels but im not sure if they have incorporated LED back lights into those displays yet. IIRC LG were releasing some IPS LED panels soon so might be worth looking around for that.
obviously this is very dependent on the games you play. but i think if you want to be running games at 1920x1024 or above you might want to consider a more powerful graphics card as well.
I believe the EW2420 will come out within the next few weeks, its supposed to be out about now... I'm waiting anxiously for review to come out about it or first comments. It looks like a winner though. It comes with 3000:1 true contrast ratio which is significantly higher than most e-IPS panel based monitors. It will include dual HDMI, USB ports, and speakers I think.... as most E series from BenQ come with onboard speakers. It will also have wide viewing angle of 178/178 like IPS panels due to its PVA panel nature. I assume that PVA is superior to e-IPS, not s-IPS but e-IPS.
It's definitely worth considering or at least waiting for :)
EDIT:
Sorry forgot to mention its claimed by BenQ as the first PVA LED backlit monitor. So yes it's LED backlit as well
