PS3 + PC --> DVI + 3.5mm Speakers - How?
I was contemplating taking a TV to uni along with my 23" PC monitor, but I'd like to avoid it if at all possible. So, the question is:
My monitor has D-SUB and DVI input and my speakers have 3.5mm stereo jack input.
My PS3 has Optical out and HDMI outputs, and my PC has DVI and 3.5mm stereo jack output.
What's the best way of making it all play nicely together?
Re: PS3 + PC --> DVI + 3.5mm Speakers - How?
The xbox 360 monitor setup is easy to set up but not sure about the ps3,but you can try this cable:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wii-PS3-VGA-Ca...efaultDomain_3
You will then need this:

To connect sound to your speakers.
But i am not 100% sure this will work but it looks like a solution,hope this helps.
Re: PS3 + PC --> DVI + 3.5mm Speakers - How?
Both of those are the same link? For the graphics, definitely looks like an option although both on DVI would probably be preferable... in that case, I guess a straight HDMI --> DVI cable would be fine, but some way of switching the source? No idea.
And not sure about the sound either... I think I've seen some optical --> 3.5mm adapters at kenable but no idea if they'd work. Again I'd need a switcher of some kind.
Sounds like a job for some kind of KVM but I suspect it wouldn't work.
Has anybody successfully done this?
Re: PS3 + PC --> DVI + 3.5mm Speakers - How?
Since you've only got 1 DVI input, then you'll need some kind of switch if you want your PS3 and your PC plugged in at the same time.
To get the HD picture, just connect a HDMI cable from the PS3 to the monitors DVI connection using a HDMI - DVI adaptor.
Then for the sound, you get your AV scart connector (as above) and connect that to a "RCA to 3.5mm lead", which in turn connects to your speakers. The PS3 can be easily be set up to output sound this way and still output the picture via the HDMI output.
If you want it all connected together, it's going to get messy :p
Re: PS3 + PC --> DVI + 3.5mm Speakers - How?
HDMI to DVI does not work unless your monitor can accept a HDCP signal over the DVI port when using one for the PS3. Anything over a few years old most certainly won't. Newer screens are still hit and miss with this feature - you need to check for your screen :)
I fell foul of this myself :(

Checked his screen earlier and Google said it's HDCP compliant ;)
Assuming he's using the one in his profile.

Yeah, just saw that too in his profile :)
Got a 2343 myself, cracking screens :)

What I would suggest doing is using a dvi-hdmi adapter with your ps3, and plugging in the standard composite cables and using an audio adapter as in the second link, and then simply use the d-sub input for your pc, there shouldn\'t be much if any noticeable loss of quality with your monitor.

Ah, brilliant. Thanks for that - exactly the type of thing I would never have found about myself!
Right, so the graphics bit is fairly easy.
PS3: HDMI to DVI cable
PC: DVI to DVI cable
Monitor: Some kind of dual DVI input device, perhaps switching? Can't find anything suitable.
Then for sound:
PS3: PS3 to Component cable --> RCA to 3.5mm converter
PC: 3.5mm to 3.5mm cable
Speakers: 3.5mm splitter
Only thing is, supposing I turned my PS3 and PC on at the same time, both of them playing music - could it blow the speakers?
Re: PS3 + PC --> DVI + 3.5mm Speakers - How?
Nope it wont, it'll just sound silly. :)
Anyway, I was going to say that you'll save yourself A LOT of hassle and issues if you just simply take your TV with you, saving money as well, which could be used for alcohol. Are you thinking space would be an issue or something?
I say this because I've tried to do the same thing myself and kinda failed at the sound part. It's a bitch to have two sound inputs for your speakers unless you have a sound system which accepts different types (like the Logitech Z5500). Could be wrong, but that's just my experience with those splitter device thingies. Having had a couple different ones, they all would do the job, but the sound quality would go way down.
You could get it to work nicely though, then maybe you can tell me how you did since I'm still looking for a good solution haha. I bet I've missed an obvious solution >_>

TV's far too big, so I'd need to buy a new one. And I still suspect it won't fit :(
Space is going to be seriously limited by the time I've crammed a desktop, officejet, server, PS3 and monitor into the room, let alone a TV as well.
And I really don't want to use a TV as my PC monitor.
Re: PS3 + PC --> DVI + 3.5mm Speakers - How?
The most simple solution is to obviously to just buy a monitor with HDMI input that can also generate sound.

Re: PS3 + PC --> DVI + 3.5mm Speakers - How?
That's just a TV, though, isn't it. And would require me to flog my monitor, which is only a few months old and suits me perfectly :(
Okay, next idea: can I buy some good value optical-in speakers to use alongside my current speakers?
Re: PS3 + PC --> DVI + 3.5mm Speakers - How?
You wont find any good value ones I don\'t think. Maybe someone else can say otherwise.
That idea of having the second monitor with speakers built in is probably the best idea, surely you have desk space for that?! means you can have a dual screen set up for your PC as well.
Re: PS3 + PC --> DVI + 3.5mm Speakers - How?
I am pretty sure you would have great benefit from dual screen in university :D one screen to look at the task and the other to do your work on.
Best idea in my opinion.
