    Gaming cards and 3D modelling

Looking at the University of Antwerp's FASTRA computer which use(d) 4 GTX 295 cards in order to generate 3D tomography images got me thinking.

How would the card in my next rig (HD 5850 Black Edition) perform with a task like Solidworks, Ansys and other CAD software. I know it's much less than half as powerful as the 4 nVidea cards in SLI but it got me thinking. It would only be running an i5 760 and 4gb of 1600mhz ram which will far from help.

Just out of curiosity really, I would never spend a licence on a gaming machine and of course a FireGL card would perform far better.

    Edit:
Latest update of the FASTRA, because they just had to go bigger. This is explicit word crazy, I mean 13 GPUs and 4 power supplies crazy!
