    VGA to TV

    Hi,

I would like to purchase a cable which transmits a VGA signal from a laptop to a TV using the standard VGA output from the back of the laptop.

Having had a quick look on the internet it seems that it's not necessarily as simple as purchasing a VGA to scart, or VGA to RCA cable. Reading a few customer reviews for such products seems to yield that they very often don't work in such a straight forward manner.

Does anyone know of a cable which will do this, or do I need some other sort of hardware?

    Re: VGA to TV

You need some sort of hardware.

Some TVs will be able to take a hacked together VGA to SCART cable, but I think that depends on the TV being able to take a SCART VGA signal instead of the composite or svideo signals that can also be sent over SCART.

I can't recomend anything in particular as I've never used things like this.

    Re: VGA to TV

ok thanks. I suspected it may be something like this.

Anyone else know what sort of box I'd need to convert a vga signal to a universal tv input?

    Re: VGA to TV

A normal TV is very low res compared to a monitor 720 x 576 don't forget a TV is also interlaced. While you can get vga converters the results are very poor. If you want to use it for playback get a graphics card with a TV out as this will at least use the correct resolution. TV (Composite) to vga convertors are quite cheap 30 quid, however the results are also quite poor. You will be disappointed.

    probably not an option

I assume the laptop is a newish one and doesn't have a dedicated TV out socket then? Any particular reason you're trying to do this in case there's an alternative workaround?

Well it's not for me actually; my uncle has just bought a laptop and would like to be able to show photos to his friends on his tv as crowding around a laptop screen isn't ideal.

I don't think it has a TV out socket, it's a standard Dell laptop.

    Re: VGA to TV

What kind of TV is it? If it's LCD or plasma then there is a good chance it has DVI or VGA inputs.

    Re: VGA to TV

If it's a new Dell then it probably won't have TV out

oolon: didn't think about the possibility of USB graphics - I'd be amazed if there wasn't some kind of USB - TV Out adapter... more research required methinks
