Hi all
I've decided I'm just going to replace my HP monitor after it packed in.
I'm looking at the U2410. Looks an awesome monitor. I'm just wondering if anyone has one and what they're like for gaming? Are the worth the extra?
Thanks!

I've been looking at this too for a while now. My friend has one, it's an amazing screen. There are complaints about green and pink tingeing problems across the screen that can't be adjusted. Buy from someone who guarantees to honour Dell's 3 years no dead pixel guarantee and be prepared to maybe have to RMA to get one without the colour imbalance problems depending on your luck in what you receive.
IPS = good viewing angle. Nice TV replacement/supplement
It has wide colour gamut. Good for photo editing + image work. Can make standard stuff look odd. Also has an sRGB mode to help resolve this.
Oh, and they're ok for gaming, but as an IPS screen they aren't quite as fast as a TN screen. Found a website which did some really good analysis of this and concluded that even though its gaming lag is 2-3x slower than a TN screen, the result is reasonable enough to game on. Purists might argue that extra 10ms makes all the difference, but well....
good review is here: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/reviews/dell_u2410.htm
Got good stand, tilt, pivot, swivel etc and DVI + HDMI inputs. Only downside is it's not 120Hz for 3D, but you'll have to decide if that matters to you.
Let me know if you get it and if so, what you think.
Thanks. Thats what I was wondering about, I've heard about these displays being a little below par for gaming.
I had an HP W2448HC, great monitor but switching back to my old 22" samsung I've noticed its alot better for gaming and movies. Little worried I'd spend £450+ on a monitor thats maybe too good for what I need!
On another note, its actually really difficult to find 1920 x 1200 monitors, they all seem to be 1080p now.
Are there any other similar monitors for around that price (or cheaper) you've seen? I like to use monitors in pivoted mode (makes code editing much easier), so something with good viewing angles is essential. Response time is not very important to me.
All I've seen is the Samsung F2380 (only 1920x1080 but cheap), the HP ZR22w (likewise), and the HP ZR24w (1920x1200 though similar price to the Dell). I don't know how they compare.
I've seen a couple of monitors around the £250 mark:
Another Dell, from what I can tell the model with an H at the end has the same stand as the U 2410 model, not sure about whether the screen pivots though:

Acer S243LBmii, no pivoting or DVI socket, not heard great things about the image from HDMI either:

And a couple of samsungs.
I'm tempted to take the stand off my HP which is height adjustable and pivots which would save me having to buy a screen with a decent stand.
They are out there if you look. LG and Samsung both were doing some when I last looked in depth about 6 months ago. I nearly bought the Samsung but some googling revealed a problem with it humming when set to anything other than 100% brightness (too bright) and it put me off. I'd recommend going for a monitor with a VESA mount and then you can buy a monitor stand that allows pivot. What you might loose out on this way is some monitors auto-detect when you pivot and do the rescaling in house so you'll have to outsource this to the graphics card.
Also research the sellers carefully. I'm finding that I can find a certain monitor in stock only on some of the more dubious websites. Not necessarily dodgy ones, but ones getting bad press elsewhere on the forum for poor customer service, difficulty to contact, ignored complaints etc.
Whether the monitor comes with a pivoting stand or you buy one separately, I'm guessing that a TN screen won't be so good in portrait mode. The G2410H linked to by adz08 is TN, while the U2410 is IPS. If you pivot a TN screen, it will be illegible from more than 30 degrees to either side (depending on the model, it may be more or less).
My HP didn't suffer from viewing angles in portrait mode and I don't think that was an IPS screed (its a HP W2448HC). Althought I rarely used it in portrait as it was too awkward to rotate!
Any other ideas on decent 24 inch screens?
