I notice that my BenQ monitor G2400W that I purchased on 19/02/2009 has gotten dimmer in the last few days...Is it a sign that the blacklight starts failing?
Should I fill in an RMA from their website?
Cheers

no need at all, just use it in a dark room and throw it away when it finally breaks
er yes you should.

I was filling out the form then it struck me that this could just happen over time as the monitor getting used/older so they may refuse to RMA it.
Post it here to make sure before I carry on.

Nope, there is none. I have filled in a RMA form anyway. I bought it from Play.com last year and I cant' even remember if the warranty is one year or three year!? Looked up on their website, only a page to display the specification and no information on warranty. I guess just trying my luck with RMA or use it in the dark till it breaks like Gonzo suggested lol

I think it's normal for CCFLs to get dimmer over time but I don't think it should be rapid like you describe. I'd recommend running monitors at less than 100% brighness for a few reasons, firstly so you don't get eye strain, secondly so the backlights don't wear out as fast (probably why MFRs set them to 100% by default) and also you have a bit of room to turn them up if they do start to fade or during bright days for example.
So should I put this RMA process on hold? I really don't want to send the monitor back to the manufacturer for them to exam and then they send it back because there is nothing wrong with it. Plus, I believe the model is discontinued.
Cheers
see what they have to say

I wouldn't be happy with a monitor getting noticeably dimmer in about 1.5 years, they should advise you in an email if it's worth doing or not.
OK, thanks guys for the advice. I'm much appreciate that, will wait to see what they got to say.

You should definitely call BenQ.uk and see what they advise you to do:

The G2400W should be discontinued by now, so it's best to call and double check
I agree with watercooled, I don't think that's normal that within one year there is a noticeable difference. And it shouldn't change over night the gradual lowered brightness should take a while and too slow for you to be able to notice until one day you have a hard time seeing details. That happened with my old laptop.
You should consider a new LED backlit based monitor, they are easier on your eyes![]()
Intel Core 2 Duo 2.0GHz, 2 GB DDR2, 500GB SATA-II 7200RPM, nVidia GeForce 9800GT 512mb, BenQ E2200 HD, BenQ G2412HD, Logitech S510 Wireless set, Creative GigaWorks T3 Speakers.
I'm not sure about those LED backlit monitors, tempted though to see what it's about.
The BenQ monitor is much worse in Linux, text seems so blurry and I try to adjust the fonts and that but it doesn't help.
Very strange, perhaps it's my eyes that I need to check...
Cheers
Also check it's running at the correct (native) resolution and refresh rate.
