    Which card would you recommend?

I'm looking to replace a dead graphics card, considering:

    HD 5770 (104.99 @ ebuyer)
    http://www.ebuyer.com/product/239210

    GTX 460 (116.87 @ scan)
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/768MB...DVI-D-Sub-HDMI

Or something else if someone has a better suggestion?

460 does it for me out of those two and is comparable to a 5830 (which may also be around for 120).

Re: Which card would you recommend?

IIRC the GTX460 has significantly more horsepower but also uses more power to run. If my past experience of AMD/Nvidia cards is anything to go by, the GTX460 will be quieter, despite having more power to dissapate.

Re: Which card would you recommend?

That seems pretty conclusive then. Was wondering if the 1GB memory of the 5770 would be worth if over the 768 of the GT 460 (I can't afford the 1GB version of that card). I take it there is nothing wrong with that specific card?

Re: Which card would you recommend?

IIRC,the GTX460 768MB can be video memory limited in certain situations but it tends to be much faster than an HD5770 1GB anyway. Since you have an HX520W I would get the GTX460 768MB.

Re: Which card would you recommend?

I had the HD 5770 and had problems with it didn't like it, I bought the ASUS 768 gtx 460 which arrived today from scan and i can't fault it I'm well chuffed. I went from onboard graphics playing cs:S 35/40fps to max everythign at 300fps.

I always had nvidia card but i bought a new pc and thought i would try radeon tbh never again.

If you can stretch few pound more i would go for this 1.
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/768MB...2xDL-DVI-mHDMI

From what I've read its the best for overclocking but is already overclocked if you don't want to do it yourself.

So, if your next Nvidia graphics card has problems will you be buying something from Matrox then??

Just because the card had an issue with your CRT does not mean that every AMD card is some dud.

If anything I have had more issues with Nvidia cards, with one 6800LE having capacitor issues and an 8800GTS 512MB going kaput. However,I have had more Nvidia cards myself so it is more likely that I would have had a dud card or two.

Re: Which card would you recommend?

The gtx460 1gb is better as it's not just more memory but also more ROPs
However they are more expensive, you're looking at around £165ish for a cheap one
    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/1GB-G...s-DL-DVI-mHDMI gigabyte £164

Although for a little more you can get the MSI cyclone £170, the cooler is said to be very good and msi supply some very nice overclocking software if you want to try to overclock it thurver.

Re: Which card would you recommend?

TBH,the GTX460 1GB is around £50 more expensive than a GTX460 786MB. However, the performance difference between the two cards is not more than 10% in most instances with current games:

Re: Which card would you recommend?

I'll be ordering a GTX 460 (768 MB version). I looked at the 1GB, there are similar articles to the one CAT posted on several sites, the difference is negligble relative to the extra cost. There are some bargain GTX 460 with the lower memory around at the moment. I don't game at mega resolutions so the difference is really not worth paying for imo.

Thanks to all for comments, I shall await my new card and mourn the death of my faithful Radeon 4850.

Maybe i should have mentioned that it was not my first radeon to have been faulty. Though i didn't think it was relivant as he was after a new card. I've also owned a old x1900xt (somthing like that) that overheated and broke which cost me a small fortune. I also had radeon 4890 which was faulty, i seem to just have bad luck experiences with radeon. Obviously not all do and this is my own opinion.

I've always chosen AMD over intel also as i think its cheaper and maybe not as good as intel. Since AMD bought ATI out maybe there graphics are the same now cheaper and not as good as some.

Though i must also admit every ATI radeon i have bought was made by XFX :¬|
