    What 22-23" monitor?

    A friend wants a new monitor and I'm a bit out-of-touch.

    Requirements :-

    - used for typical PC uses, some graphics, and photography is a priority
    - occasional gaming, but not a priority
    - not used for watching movies, etc.

    - budget .... as little as he can get away with for a decent quality unit
    - budget .... preferably £150 or less, really £200m max.

    - size .... probably 22-23". Larger is okay provided it doesn't compromise quality or budget, but isn't a priority.

Suggestions (and reasons for them) appreciated.

If your willing to do some hunting to find a retailer stocking it then I think Cats found a brilliant bang for buck monitor in the BenQ VW2420H or its sibling the EW2420H. Both are 24" 1920x1080 VA panels for about £170.

I second that review and the choice. The EW2420/VW2420 is a great choice
However, if he needs spot on color production, his budget may need to be stretched to get some S-IPS panel based monitors.
He may consider Dell's Ultrasharp series, but they should be past the £300 mark....
The BenQ may be his best choice as far as under £200 yet producing marvelous colors, mainly thanks to its native 3000:1 contrast ratio.

After having 2 monitors that failed from BenQ just after the warranty period had expired, I am sorry I cannot agree with your recommendation. ASUS monitor here http://www.ebuyer.com/product/168170 good price and I believe ASUS have built up their reputation as a solid brand.

If you were indifferent to brand names, HannsG are cheap but apparently very good. 24.6" http://www.scan.co.uk/product.aspx?ProductId=39076 today only for £125 for a very large screen size.

Perhaps you've had bad luck with the 2 BenQ monitors. I'm sorry to hear.

However, I think it's important to remember that BenQ is in the top 3 Panel manufacturers in the world:
    LG
    Samsung
AU Optronics (part of the BenQ Coorporation)

So therefore, it'd be ignorant to rule out BenQ as a brand worth buying from. BenQ provides panels for companies such as Asus, Acer, Dell, etc. I would recommend someone to buy a monitor from a reputable company who specializes in this industry (LG, Samsung, BenQ). Plus the EW2420 is the first of it's kind. It's the first in lines of monitors to be offering native contrast ratio at 3000:1. That is unspeakable performance. And one can argue that it may even surpass color saturation levels of several mid-end IPS panels due to its high native contrast ratio levels.

I really like my Dell SP2309W.

    http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sna...~ck=dellSearch

Yes it's over budget, but with Dell there are always some discounts floating around ( I got 20% off mine just by going through a link via Google Product search)

In terms of selling it to you ... Higher than Full HD resolution - built in USB hub and webcam, high quality stand with adjustments, considering its a TN panel, great colours and black levels. 1:1 pixel mapping too.

Whilst I do agree it may be ignorant to rule BenQ out, having been stung twice I personally will not buy another BenQ product again. However as you said, it could have just been rotten luck on my part - I don't know how their latest products are in terms of reliability. Personally, I found that even some of the budget brands end up lasting longer than some of the well known brands (in comparison to my BenQ monitors).

Samsung or LG are probably better choices.

    Re: What 22-23" monitor?

Thanks for the comments, everyone. I'm still reading if anyone has anything to add.

Perhaps I ought to clarify though. That £200 max really is a hard max. He's prepared to go to £200 if absolutely necessary, but made it clear to me that he has to draw a line somewhere (or he'll end up with an Eizo) and it's at £200, and even then, only if absolutely necessary. £200? Maybe. £201? Nope. And if he can get in well under that, so much the better. He'll certainly sacrifice size rather than increase budget, so if it means going down to 21" or even 20", it'll happen before the budget goes over £200.

As for reliability with and experiences of, for instance, BenQ, it's valuable to get feedback and experiences, both positive and negative. I guess with any large-scale product, there's going to be those with bad experience. While I'm not sure I'd let a small number stop me buying, I would pass on that feedback and let him decide how to evaluate it.

I understand the perspective from both muppet hat and TheWizard .... and I agree with TheWizard that if I'd been stung twice, I'd be reluctant to try for a hat-trick, but also with muppet-hat that it may have just been an unfortunate coincidence. I guess if 1 in 10,000 monitors is duff, it's possible (though a long shot) to get two in a row.

In any event, keep the opinions coming, guys. It's all useful.

Having used a few Dell Monitors recently, there are a couple that might be worth a look at:

or, I know the £200 was a hard budget, but I think this may be worth the extra, dependent on what he plans for the future:

    Re: What 22-23" monitor?

Thanks Dave, but no, he made it clear he's not interested in even looking at anything over £200, no matter how good or how little it's over it. He'll struggle to get to £200, but that's an absolute, cast-iron, no exceptions limit.

As for the other one, that's a possible. I just worry a bit about "optimum choice for cinematic quality and makes watching movies, playing games and photo editing an amazing experience." Games aren't a high priority and it'll not get used for movies, so as long as the other aspects, including build quality aren't compromised by building functionality he doesn't want, then it's a contender.

It's a bit like me and mobile phones. If they build in load of features I don't want like games and a camera, and GPS, and so on, it makes me feel I'm either paying for features I don't want and will never use, or that a phone at the same cost without those features could have been better quality if budget hadn't bee wasted on unnecessary (for me) gadgets.

That's my concern with that Dell ... if it's so great for HD and cinematc quality, and gaming, does it take away from the main use of the screen or bump the cost?

If, for instance, he could save a few quid by not having HDMI, or not be able to play movies at all, he would, just like if I had a choice of two otherwise identical phones, but where one had GPS and a camera, but cost £1 more, I'd save the pound and have the cheaper one.

It may be that adding those features to that Dell doesn't add to the cost at all, in which case, it's a contender, but it makes me nervous when they highlight facilities he won't want.
