    Is this normal? Windows dragging

    Hello,

I just reinstalled my windows OS and I notice this problem after installing my drivers...

When I drag a window, even when the CPU is under no stress at all, I get image delays behind the window I'm dragging... Is this normal? Is there any fix for it? I've got the latest compatible drivers for my GPU, and I installed drivers for my monitor too...

    Thanks

Usually means graphics drivers in my experience. I'd try rebooting and reinstalling if I were you, maybe something went awry.

Might be worth checking gaming performance as well, which would likely show up any issues.

Is it a problem that Vista automatically installs a default VGA driver whenever I uninstall my current GPU driver and then restart? After restarting the first thing that happens is that Vista starts installing drivers on its own, I have not been able to figure out how to make it stop doing that, and that may be the problem, if this is in fact a driver issue.

    Thanks

That's normal, afaik. Some kind of driver has to be there, so Windows just uses a default one until something better is provided.

This is an annoying problem, it makes me think something is wrong. AFAIK nobody else has this problem and I don't remember it before.

You don't have such an issue when dragging windows, do you?

I did a clean install, I booted from CD, formatted my drives, installed Vista 64-bit Home Premium... Logged in... downloaded windows updates, downloaded drivers from ASUS (for my mobo)... and downloaded the latest GTX 285 driver from NVidia... Installed it all, and now I see this window dragging thing...

Re: Is this normal? Windows dragging

Like I said, I've only ever encountered it when I haven't had the latest drivers properly installed. This seems to be something else.

I would give 3DMark06 or a game a try, see how gaming performance holds up.

It might appear to have something to do with my CPU, I notice in task manager that my cpu usage goes up from stable 2-6% to 30% whenever, and for as long as, I drag a window around repeatedly, which causes this huge trail.

Maybe I damaged my CPU with an overclock... but I find that hard to believe since I've never put the voltage past 1.39 and it has never been more than 400x9 (3.6 ghz) which is pretty standard for a Q6600 for most people.

Could it be possible that having too much Thermal Paste could do such a thing? Like slow your CPU or cause some stutter? I think I may have put too much, I never know how much is enough, some say a small dot, some say a small line from corner to corner...

I'm going to open it up and clean it and give that a try just to be sure...

    Any other ideas?

Thanks... hope someone else adds their input too, maybe someone has had this problem or knows more about it

That almost sounds as if there's no GPU acceleration, and the CPU is trying to do all of the graphics work. I notice you don't have Aero enabled?

How do I get GPU acceleration enabled then?

I turned Aero on and it doesn't show the windows trail anymore... But it still increases CPU usage by ~20% when I drag a window around.

Well, if the graphics card is working, you should have GPU acceleration. If Aero is working, you definitely have it - or it wouldn't work.

I've just tested - if I drag my Skype window around, Skype's CPU-usage shoots to 20% or so from virtually nothing, so maybe it's normal?

Okay, maybe it's just one of those things you never notice until you redo your system and notice all of these little "problems" that sat for so long in your subconscious and you just think there are problems because it is fresh but laggy ? lol

Thanks for the help though snootyjim

CPU usage % always shoots a bit for my system when you do something from idle. It's pretty normal. (try moving your cursor really quickly from idle - that shoots up as well but it dies down later). As long as the windows are not dragging, it means your drivers work.

Re: Is this normal? Windows dragging

CPU increasing on window moving is normal, depending on the system. The image getting delayed by much though suggests poor 2d speeds - I think it was AMD who had a driver bug that caused the 2d speeds to drop too low, though maybe the particular revision of your 285 driver also has the same kind of thing. You could try disabling power saving measures (something like powermixer on nVidia I recall) and checking refresh rates too.

This isn't some kind of diasability feature like mouse tailing?

    Clutching at straws here.

Yeah that's two votes for "normal" so I think I'll leave that alone for now.

I did update my Intel cpu drivers and stuff, I think it should be fine... my gpu is the latest driver... settings are practically default, I can't imagine any changes that would improve anything... I played BFBC2 just now and it ran smoother than ever at high settings, so that's perfect... I guess it's just something in windows vista that cannot be helped.

Thanks for the input, but I think it isn't such a feature as that, it's probably just normal and I'm over-analyzing this whole thing.

    Thanks everyone
