3dfx - do you still have a warm feeling for them?
The first game I saw running under 3Dfx steam was Quake2 - and I was in AWE!
1 word, SLI....... :D
Not too young, but wasn't into computers when they were around.
Quake 2 full details voodoo 3000AGP was a dream :) 3dfx were the daddies of their time. And kingpin on full details with the 3000AGP was just the mutts nuts so to speak :D
Never had a Voodoo card, my first card was a Geforce 2 MX.
my first card was a guillemot (now hercules) voodoo2. the guy at the shop tried to flog me off with a banshee but i was having none of it..
yeah they were good. nvidia were no-one back then (tnt1 was carp) and ati were starting their poor period (rage 2 turbo anyone?).. lotta love but never gonna happen again
Riva128ZX series was good - showed NVIDIA from the start revolutionising driver dev
Was at Uni at the time, had a 4mb card in the first year, was SOOOOOO jealous seeing someone get dual SLI's.
It was my introduction to multiplayer gaming, Quake and QW was the game of choice.
3DFX was the ATI and NVidia of my Uni days....
TiG
p.s But this is the card manufacturer not the annoying spammy golf loving hexus member ;)
Before my time really, I rember seeing the voodoo series in shops but my first 'real' card was a TNT2.
"God GLQuake made me cream my panties"
o yes
My first PC, was top of the line P233 MMX, 64MB RAM, 4GB HDD. I upgraded from the 2mb s3 virge to a beastly 4MB Matrox Millenium II with 250mhz ramdac and dual ported wram. It was the beast of bodmin. Then what came out? you guessed it the 3Dfx Voodoo 1 (cant remember whether it was the Daimond Moster 3d or the Orchid). That went in alongside the millenium - and that was the fastest gaming machine in the world. You should have seen the first time i loaded GLQuake.exe. OMFG 640x480 all singing and dancing 3d. UNF UNF UNF!!!
My mate had a P100/16MB and he made the mistake of putting in a PowerVR card in. He said it was better then a 3dfx, i laughed. He ended up running Quake1 in software mode again because the PowerVR had artifacts and crashed often. I laughed more.
3dfx voodoo1 was the daddy, the king. The lord of all graphics cards. Pity it went downhill from then on for 3dfx (thanks to nvidia).
My next pc was a AMD K62-350 and in that went one of the first Riva TNT1 cards, a 16MB opengl beast. That was the card that killed 3DFX, at 800x600 the TNT1 caned the Voodoo2 in image quality - as i had a top of the line Mitubishi Diamond Pro 700 17" at the time - i could notice the image quality even more. My Voodoo1 was the only 3dfx card i bought. Voodoo 2 was outclassed, SLI mode whilst giving 1024x768, reduced image quality even more. The increase in FPS did not warrant the drop in IQ for me. AFter the voodoo2 - 3dfx just lost it. the 3000 was crap, the 4000 was a joke, the 5000 was a desperate last breath. Thus 3dfx ended. I was sorry to see it, the company did more for us gamers than most.
Butuz
there goes my panties....
:)
loved it...I had Voodoo 1 and 2 :)
Voodoo 1 was just......sex!
Nope... Never really liked them despite having a voodoo 1 in my first PC (well when I could afford it anyway!). Always seemed like a bad solution with the passthrough and it made my already nasty goldfish bowl type 14" monitor even less clear. Then with the whole 16-bit is enough for anyone saga I really went off them. Was nVidia all the way for a while after that and been ATI since I had the opportunity to see a GF3 TI 200 side by side with an ATI 8500...
I went CL 5446 + voodo 1
Then got a Riva128
Then V2
Then well - every card released since
god that takes me back used to have the sli one very good cards shame they got bought up, nothing like pics of quake tho i was awed when i saw an internet game for the first time ...couldnt believe it!
