Just wondering how easy would it be to get a replacement transister for a burnt out one on a graphics card? Also would there be any problems relacing it myself? The card is a power color radeon 9600 pro. If it helps here's a picture pointing out which transister is burnt out: http://student.cs.ucc.ie/~dmk2/card.jpg

That looks more like an IC than a transister to me.
Also, if you were to find a replacement, replacing surface mounted components is rather tricky.
Cant you RMA it ?
If it is the IC thats gone like Kez says, its very unlikly that it would be easily fixable :(
The card isn't mine but I'm thinking of buying it cos its being offered so cheap as a result of the burnt out transistor. Sorry, the arrow points to the general region of the transistor not the transistor itself, my mistake, but as far as I know its definately the transister thats burnt out. Whats the chances of being able to replace it?
Its only worth money to a company which fixes them as they will have the
spare boards.
look at the chip thats burnt write down the numbers google it and see if you
can buy it.
also check out rswww.com for parts there is no . between rs and www.
If they dont have it dont bother unless you can get another broken board.
IC's of any kind are a bugger to get off you might have to use two soldering irons at the same time to get it off.
Then you dont even know if something else was damaged.
Personally i would only do it if i had two broken boards. How much are you
going to buy it for?
I did a bypass on a surface mount fuse on my noritake vfd. Wasnt pretty but it worked, the fuse was a couple of mm long. I used a very fine soldering tip and and just soldered a bridge across the component. It was very fiddly but worked, I used one of those helping hands things with the magnifier.
The card would have to be damn cheap and there's not gte it would work, other thing is how goods your soldering and do you have the gear? The only reason I played with the noritake was that the maker would be able to sort it if I couldnt. As i said damn risky, the card would have to be nearly free to be worth a try.
I'd say Id get the card for about £5 and the delivery to Ireland would cost me about £10 or £15 I reckon. As for the soldering, I wouldn't even try it myself, I'd get my father to do it, he's got all the equipment and he's pretty good because he's a lecturer and he used to teach some electrionics stuff which would have involved alot of soldering.
