Why is this more expensive than the new model

    ATI HD 5970 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/222105 £500

    ATI HD 6870 http://www.ebuyer.com/product/244430 £195

Why is the 5970 so expensive and the brand new 6870 so much cheaper? *confused*

Re: Why is this more expensive than the new model

The 6870 is the replacement for the 5850.

The 'mid-range' is now the 68xx with the high end being the 6950/70 for single GPU's and 6990 being the top offering dual-GPU.
Kalniel: "Nice review Tarinder - would it be possible to get a picture of the case when the components are installed (with the side off obviously)?"
CAT-THE-FIFTH: "The Antec 300 is a case which has an understated and clean appearance which many people like. Not everyone is into e-peen looking computers which look like a cross between the imagination of a hyperactive 10 year old and a Frog."
TKPeters: "Off to AVForum better Deal - £20+Vat for Free Shipping @ Scan"
for all intents it seems to be the same card minus some gays name on it and a shielded cover ? with OEM added to it - GoNz0.

But the 68xx is still better than the 59xx ??? So why buy the 59xx when you can buy the better 68xx for much cheaper?

Re: Why is this more expensive than the new model

    What!?

The 68xx get nowhere near the 5970 as the 5970 is essentially two 5870's on one card - considering the 6870 is slower than 5870, the 68xx cards are some way behind the 5970.

    This is the new hierachy performance wise;

    6990>6970/5970>6950/5970>5870>6870>5850>6850.

The 69xx cards aren't released yet but are expected around late November/early December.

    Oh, okay...

Do you have a good benchmark list of the highest performing gpu's, all of them, not just some companies or whatever.... It's hard to figure out whether to buy MSI/eVGA, etc for NVidia, and then compare to ATI... and their companies... and the different brackets, 5800, 5900... 6800.... it's all confusing for me unless I have a simple graph to look at.

    Thanks

    Read the Hexus reviews?

Generally going with a motherboard manufacturer based GPU isn't going to short change you in any great way.

Probably best to stay away from XFX, VTX and other such companies.

I know Sapphire is seen as a decent ATi card brand but some other people say they're not too clever so you'll have to do some looking around. Like i say, the Hexus reviews would be a decent start

Re: Why is this more expensive than the new model

The HD6850 1GB is targeted at the GTX460 768MB and cheaper GTX460 1GB cards. The HD6850 1GB was available for under £135 at launch but prices have been increased by retailers and/or suppliers.

The HD6870 1GB is targeted against the more expensive GTX460 1GB cards and cheaper GTX470 cards.

Re: Why is this more expensive than the new model

I'm planning for the future if I decide to upgrade anytime soon... if money allows ofc.

I'm thinking Core i7 with a 24" 120hz monitor, but I need a GPU capable of handling VSync with steady 120 FPS in order to benefit from it.

Any idea if that is possible?

Re: Why is this more expensive than the new model

Depends on the game, no matter what GPU your never going to get 120FPS on Crysis
