The 1GB version is the one to get if you can afford it. The 768MB version doesn't just have less memory, it actually loses 1/4 of the card's "back end", which means it also has less memory bandwidth and less ROPs (the bits that actually push the pixels). That makes it quite a bit slower.
Thanks Scaryjim, I def go for the 1GB, do you have any thoughts on a manufacture?
I was thinking of a Gigabyte!
Don't think it matters that much tbh. The difference between manufacturers is pretty small. The main difference is going to be in overclocks and cooler design. But the reference GTX460 is pretty damn good anyway, so personally I'd just go for the cheapest 1GB version you can lay your hands on :D
Once again thanks Scaryjim
I'll do some searching.
I have the gigabyte 460 OC and I can highly recommend it. Its really quiet and cool when gaming (crysis warhead, metro 2033, DOW2, LFD2).
The super OC version is out and it looks great too.
I bought mine 2 months ago and its already dropped in price by £30!
Your HTPC is more powerful than my main pc :D
I also have the Gigabyte 460 1GB standard OC version and I can also attest to it's quietness. Personally, I'd say save yourself the money and get the regular OC than the SOC version as you can easily do that overclock yourself.
The 460's practically overclock themselves.
Thanks everyone,
think I'll go for for Gigabyte 1GB OC for £149.77
What res are you running at? 1900 then yes the 1gb is definitely the option to take, you'll regret it otherwise. significantly below that and the 768 will probably suffice tbh.
If you haven't spent your money yet there are quite a few deals on the OCd 460s atm.

For example.
The Gigabyte cooler is much better, probably the best version of the the 460 in terms of price/performance. It's virtually silent too.
Yup, the only quieter stock card is the MSI talon hawk editions...and they cost significantly more.
460 768 v 1gb is more then memory size to consider, they are differently designed and the 1GB version is superior in a few areas.
if your playing games at resolution 1680x1050 then 768mb be perfect but if your going play over 1080 then i would reconmend getting the 1GB version and as for brand i really like the KFA2 version of the GTX460 which i have one, quite loud fan but the temp wise is amazing and KFA2 has 2 years warranty with full customer service for UK only.
I have the GB OC 1GB as mentioned above, very very quiet, have a hefty OC on mine and maxes out at 67C when being hammered with a few hours of CoHO or BC2 :) Fantastic card, would order a second if the wife would OK the spend :P
Once again, thanks to all for your inputs, still think the GB 1GB OC the way to go.
cheers
Brands to consider: MSI Cyclone / MSI Hawk / Asus (all variants) / Gigabyte OC / Gigabyte Super OC
All these have 'fan'tastic coolers and produce low noise and decent temps.
I've heard the EVGA and Palit are ones to definitely avoid, as they're very noisy.
Luckily the Asus goes for about £150-155, the Gigabyte OC for £150, and the highly-OC'd MSI Hawk Talon Attack can be yours for about £163.
From testing myself and through others all 460's can generally hit about 850 core and at least 2000 memory before having to up the voltage. I would say those speeds are sweet spot on the cards.
Definitely download MSI Afterburner (it works for all cards) which allows you to set custom fan profiles, and fully overclock the cards to whatever you like (and increase voltages substantially if you like). Fantastic little app.
I can reach 1000 core and 2100 or more on the memory if I like, but the real world performance difference isn't that noticable so I stick to 850 core and 2050 mem as it's virtually silent in all games at those speeds (about 50% fan speed ...2800-2900 RPM). I have set a custom fan control though as the default ramps up the fan speeds unnecessarily high)
I have the MSI Hawk Talon Attack btw.... £163 from Scan.
