Recommend a GFX card sub £200

Going to build myself a new water cooled based PC and as I've been out the loop on hardware components for some years can someone recommend me a GFX card for under £200 please.

Re: Recommend a GFX card sub £200

I would go for a HD 6950, it's about £220, but is definitely worth the £20 extra. You can even unlock it to become a 6970.

Otherwise for cards that fall into budget, a HD 5870 if you don't mind slightly older tech. If you want latest, then get the HD 6870, but it's slower than the 5870.

If you want to go with Nvidia, then get the GTX 470, but it runs a lot hotter than the ATI/AMD cards and is end of line (as is the 5870).

5870 if you ask me. Or SLI GTX460s? £115 each...

Cheers guys for the recommendations. I prefably want to spend as much under £200 as possible so will look into the cards mentioned. I don't want to do SLI for heat or power consumption. I also heard that mentioned that NVidia cards run very hot these days is that the case?

GTX 460 is the coolest running card on the market, but anything like a GTX470 or GTX480 is very hot indeed. GTX 5XX sereies less so.

In which case, as nibbler mentioned, the GTX 460 1GB is decent or if you want ATI, the HD 6850. Nvidia might be releasing the successor to the 460 (560) soonish though.

If you don't might older gen, then get the HD 5850, it's faster than the 460 or 6850 for around the same price or cheaper.

I found this 2048Mb ATi Radeon HD 6950 PCI-Express VGA Card (£210), but I am not sure if it will be helpful at all.

The 1st gen HD 6950 is more or less all based on the AMD generic version AFAIK. Maybe there are better coolers or reliable brands.

Maybe someone with a little more expertise can have a look and give an opinion for sloany007?

I would recommend 6850, quiet, efficient and quite powerful, you can save some money of your budget to do something else

As I have said in previous posts, when it comes to manufacturers it is down to personal preference and past experience. I haven't actually had much contact with anyone other than XFX, but this is only because I haven't had any problems with them with past products I've bought.

Given your question about what graphics card to buy, a HD5870 wouldnt be a bad choice. You could easily find one in the price bracket you mentioned. A good gaming card that should have no problem handling the latest games.

    Hope this helps mate.

If you can wait a few more weeks then hold out for the new nVidia GTX 560. It is the only way to be sure.

Re: Recommend a GFX card sub £200

Thanks for the info guys, im not in a massive rush to buy although the rest of my kit will be arriving next week so might get itchy fingers! £210 is a little bit out of my price range and really want to stick to it (well over budget already, hehe), does anyone know how much the nVidia GTX 560 will be on release?? if thats over budget il probably go for a HD5870 and save myself afew quid. anyone had any bad experiences with particular makes??

    thanks for the help guys.

    Society's to blame,
    Or possibly Atari.

Re: Recommend a GFX card sub £200

i would agree, wait till the 25th and see what the gtx 560 can do, at the least its likely to drive 6950 prices closer to £200
also 1GB 6950 are rumored to be incoming and should retail well under £200

Edit: if your going for NV i would advise an evga card, there support and customer service is second to none
not to mention all the programs they to e.g. 90 day step up (buy yourself a 460 and upgrade to a 560 in 3 months when the price drops)
